Wide of countryside\u003cbr/\u003eThe economic recovery in the US remains painfully slow - but  a new movement is confident local collectives are a better way to invest.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled Slow Money, the idea is that returns on investments can also be in the form of a collective good - like a healthier environment or better community.\u003cbr/\u003eA small organic chicken farm may not appear to be the hottest investment on the market. \u003cbr/\u003eBut all the same, financiers from a new movement called Slow Money think this is a sound investment.\u003cbr/\u003eBy encouraging socially responsible investment, with an emphasis on local food systems, Slow Money aims to take a small amount of money out of the traditional financial markets and put it into a new system which takes the social and environmental impact into account.\u003cbr/\u003eAlexis Koefoed, owner of Soul Food Farm, has spent the last 11 years caring for free range chickens for eggs and meat on a small scale. \u003cbr/\u003eHer hens are well cared for and her premium product goes to high-end local restaurants and to neighbours via a refrigerator in the driveway on an honour system. \u003cbr/\u003eBut each egg comes at a premium and business is tough.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlikely to receive a bank loan, Koefoed needed to seek an alternative means of financing. She received a $40,000 loan from Slow Food, and Koefoed used the money to keep the farm going.\u003cbr/\u003eSlow Money is the name of a movement, but it's also non-profit and seeks to connect investors with opportunities for modest returns along with an environmental or social benefit. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the organisation's annual gathering in San Francisco in October, leaders made presentations, investors looked at potential deals, and everyone learned about local food.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the last decade, mission-related investing has gained in popularity, drawing many investors to keep in mind goals like social justice and environmental responsibility.\u003cbr/\u003eSlow Money has combined this desire for a positive impact with an emphasis on agriculture and proximity, so that money is invested within communities and regions. \u003cbr/\u003eSlow Money - named after Slow Food - aims to have one million people investing one percent of their assets in local food systems within a decade.\u003cbr/\u003eEntrepreneur Teddy Stray runs Point Reyes Compost Co., a business that processes manure, that would normally be considered a waste product, and sells it for use in agriculture. \u003cbr/\u003eStray says he has benefited from the feedback given by potential investors associated with Slow Money.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With Slow Money it's helped me because I've been able to, when I'm looking at my business, they have helped me look at components that maybe I have not looked at hard enough, and they ask a lot of hard questions.
