The Shanghaiborn actress now based in LA, is making her acting return to China as a producer and lead actor in an international distribution.\u003cbr/\u003e``Pavilion of Women' is the first production in China to feature a major international or Hollywood star since Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun was shot in Shanghai in the late 80's.\u003cbr/\u003eAn adaptation of a Pearl Buck novel, Pavilion of Women is set outside Shanghai in the countryside in 1937.\u003cbr/\u003eThe romantic drama tells the story of Madam Wu, the mistress of a rich man who, tired of submitting to her abusive husband, decides to bring in a concubine so she can devote her time to the education she yearns for and live a life more independant of the dullwitted patriarch.\u003cbr/\u003eBut her decision leads to turmoil in the family and sets her on a dangerous path to confrontation with her own desires when she falls in love with an american missionnary doctor.\u003cbr/\u003eThe production, a first in China for Universal Pictures is also a first for Willem Dafoe who finds China, well.... surprising.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local villagers who, for the most part don't even own a TV set, are intrigued by the whole movie armada working on their doorstep....to the point where they have to be chased away. But still, Dafoe feels like the invisible man....\u003cbr/\u003eThe filmmakers are looking for complete authenticity. The church on the set was reconstructed based on old pictures.\u003cbr/\u003eIt took three years for Luo Yang to put together the project. It ended up as a collaboration between the Beijing Film Studios and Moonstone International Inc. Luo Yang's LA based Production company. Luo Yang, who moved to the US in 1989, already has a long list of credits  as actress in China. This is her first film as producer and she reckons things are hard but she will overcome all the problems. Not easy when  you are a female, Asian and it is in China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main difficulties lie in the absence in China of a Hollywood style production management system, particularly obvious when handling a multi national crew coming from the US, China and Hong Kong.\u003cbr/\u003eFortunately, the Hong Kong crew, speaking both Mandarin and English, mediate between the various sides in the English speaking movie.\u003cbr/\u003eYim Ho, the director, is himself a Hong Kong filmmaker whose movies have won top awards at film festivals around the world. One of his films ``The Sun Has Ears' won the best director award at the international critics prize at the Berlin Film Festival.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film required considerable research, but from his Academy Awardwinning role as ``Sergeant' Elias in Oliver Stone's ``Platoon' to ``The Last Temptation of Christ' the role is nothing new for Willem Dafoe.\u003cbr/\u003eDafoe's most recent credit is
