Wide shot girls dancing.\u003cbr/\u003eRoma gypsies in Italy are using fashion to escape the misery of a life of poverty.\u003cbr/\u003eAntica Sartoria Rom is a dressmakers on the outskirts of Rome set up by Roma gypsies trying to overcome the difficulties of marginalisation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe surroundings might lack the glamour of the Milan catwalks, but the models at this fashion show on the outskirts of Rome are no less determined to make their mark.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a show for Antica Sartoria Rom - a dressmakers set up by Roma gypsies. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to show want we can do, for children, for adults, for gypsies, for Italians. Because we only use natural fibre - because it was the one used in the eighteen hundreds, we don't use acrylic, polyamide, rubber, etc. etc.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe team of three Roma women operate from a tiny, dark and run-down basement on the outskirts of the city. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are putting together the designs for the launch of the new clothing collection for children.   \u003cbr/\u003eThere are some seven thousand Roma people in the Italian capital, a city of two point seven million people. (2.7)  \u003cbr/\u003eSince Romania joined the EU in 2007, thousands of Roma have moved west to richer European countries, where many live in squalid camps with no access to health services, education, basic sanitary facilities or jobs. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 700 encampments have been built in Italy, where Gypsies have been met with hostility and blamed for begging and street crime.\u003cbr/\u003eThe women at  the Antica Sartoria Roma earn on on average 450 Euro a month (635 USD).  \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a small amount by western standards, but for the women here this is a safe haven - where both legal work conditions and salary are guaranteed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Rocco says the Italian law makes it very hard for her to employ good, hard-working Roma women.  \u003cbr/\u003eMany people in the Roma community have resided in Italy for more than 20 years, but the government does not recognise their legal status, or their residence in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eWithout a legal residence status they are unemployable. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Very often it is impossible to do a work contract for someone who doesn't have a residence permit. Therefore it's not even allowed for an employer to employ her,\" says Rocco. \u003cbr/\u003eAntica Sartoria Roma was established as an official co-operative in 1996, but it started out years earlier in the make shift camps for Roma gypsies on the outskirts of Rome. \u003cbr/\u003eThey assembled in schools, gyms, and sometimes even in parks, to create the beautiful interwoven patterns of colours and laces.   \u003cbr/\u003eFinally, in 2006 the local administration assigned them a permanent space where they can now carry on with their activity legally.   \u003cbr/\u003eThree years on and they still have no electricity - they are forced to borrow it from their neighbour on the ground floor. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the women don't complain, Rocco says they are just happy to have this space.  \u003cbr/\u003eTo be able to work freely, and to take pride in their culture and customs. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Casilino 900 camp on the outskirts of Rome is home to the largest Gypsy population in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eSpokesman for the camp, Naio Adzovic says the Italian government  is aware of the difficulties Roma Gypsies have obtaining work, but is still unwilling to improve their conditions. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They (the government) are putting us in a condition where we cannot react. Because thousands of Roma who really want to work don't have a residence permit, but have been living in Italy for twenty years. And the Italian government knows this.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTension is rising in the capital following a wave of complaints from Romans living near the Casilino 900 camp, who accuse the Romas of polluting the air by burning tyres.   \u003cbr/\u003eIn Naples last year shacks were set on fire in the district of Ponticelli, following an alleged attempt by a gypsy youth to kidnap a baby from a home in a Naples suburb.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn recent weeks a tougher legislation on illegal immigration has taken effect. \u003cbr/\u003eIt makes entering or staying in Italy without permission a crime punishable by a fine of five-thousand to 10-thousand euros (6,840-13,670 USD).   \u003cbr/\u003eThe legislation passed is part of an overall security bill that also authorises citizen anti-crime patrols.  \u003cbr/\u003eIntegration for Roma people in Italy has proved difficult and ignorance about the Roma culture and habits is widespread.   \u003cbr/\u003eAdzovic says more Roma people should be given the chance to work in co-operatives like Antica Sartoria Roma.\u003cbr/\u003e\"To open a cooperative means giving the possibility to work.
