Close-up of Lord Justice Leveson
16. Wide of Rebekah Brooks leaving the inquiry
The former editor of Britain's News of the World and the Sun tabloids gave evidence at the country's media ethics inquiry on Friday.
Forty-three year old Rebekah Brooks, who resigned in July as Chief Executive of News International, Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper division, told the inquiry of her close ties to those in power.
Brooks' evidence on Friday has meant Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt faces fresh questions amid claims that he wanted News Corporation to "guide his and No 10's positioning" on phone hacking.
A newly-disclosed email from News Corporation's public affairs executive Fred Michel also boasts of a tip-off about an "extremely helpful" statement the Culture Secretary was making to Parliament on the BSkyB bid.
The allegations surfaced in material disclosed to the Leveson Inquiry by Brooks.
A message from Michel to Brooks, dated June 27 2011, gave an apparent preview of what Jeremy Hunt would say about the BSkyB bid later that week.
The email stated Hunt wanted to "prevent a public inquiry," instead suggesting Parliament's Joint Committee on Privacy and Injunctions should carry out a wider investigation.
Hunt had been supposed to be acting as an impartial judge to decide whether to approve the takeover or refer it to regulators.
A month later reports emerged that Milly Dowler's mobile phone had been accessed, causing a public outcry and leading British Prime Minister David Cameron to launch the Leveson Inquiry.
Brooks was asked about a number of topics on Friday and said there was nothing inappropriate about her dealings with senior police officers.
She handed a list of meetings with senior officers and commissioners between 1999 and 2010 to the inquiry into press standards.
Her records include meetings with former Metropolitan Police head of communications Dick Fedorcio, as well as former commissioners Sir Paul
Stephenson and Sir Ian Blair, and former assistant commissioner John Yates.
Sir Paul Stephenson and Yates both resigned over the controversy over the hiring of ex-News of the World deputy editor Neil Wallis as a consultant.
Fedorcio, who has also resigned, has told the inquiry that he hired Wallis because he wanted someone he knew and trusted.
Brooks said meetings with senior police officers would sometimes include the Sun's crime editor, and may have sometimes been about the Sun-backed Police Bravery Awards.
She said at the bravery awards, she saw journalists come into contact with officers from the Metropolitan Police, as well as from across the country.
She said some meetings with senior police officers would take place at restaurants as they were "neutral."
After she became editor of the Sun in 2003, Brooks said she spoke to media mogul Rupert Murdoch "frequently."
Brooks also denied hacking into medical records to discover that former British prime minister Gordon Brown's son Fraser had cystic fibrosis.
Instead, she said the information came from a father whose son had the same condition.
Brooks also told the inquiry she had not told the then Children's Secretary Ed Balls to fire former Haringey Head of Children's Services Sharon Shoesmith over the Baby Peter scandal.
Brooks has twice been arrested and questioned by police about illegal eavesdropping and obstruction of justice.
She is currently on police bail pending further inquiries, but has not been charged with any offence.

<button
