Close up of exhaust pipe\u003cbr/\u003eSalt is becoming big business as an experimental treatment for asthma patients.\u003cbr/\u003eA centuries-old salt mine in Pakistan is attracting patients who are queuing up to try its converted underground caverns, but in the UK the trend for artificial salt rooms is causing concern.\u003cbr/\u003eKhewra is believed to be the world's second largest salt mine.\u003cbr/\u003eNestled within this mountain range, it's long been a tourist attraction.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now the mine is cashing in on salt therapy as a treatment for asthma sufferers and it's claimed people come here from as far as Dubai and Saudi Arabia.\u003cbr/\u003eOne hundred and sixty kilometres (100 miles) south of Pakistan's capital Islamabad, the mine was discovered back in 320 BC by the Greek warrior Alexander's troops and first developed by British colonial rulers in 1872.\u003cbr/\u003ePatients take a small rail train to the clinical areas located deep underground.\u003cbr/\u003eThe asthma clinic resembles an upmarket guesthouse.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are six cabins separated with salt bricks and softly lit by lamps.\u003cbr/\u003eThere aren't many medical centres decorated like this.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ambient lighting is provided by salt lamps and the lounge comes complete with a fountain, sofas and television.\u003cbr/\u003eThe walls and roof of the clinic are made from pure salt and a fan helps maintain the temperature and humidity, creating the so-called \"micro-climate\" which is claimed to relieve the patients.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clinic claims asthma patients and sufferers of other respiratory illnesses benefit from inhaling antibacterial salt particles in a sterile environment, helping loosen mucus and clear the lung passages.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clinic argues that the use of any medicine is unnecessary here  because patients with asthmatic allergies can recover simply by breathing in the air.\u003cbr/\u003eAbdul Rehim is now a regular here.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he \"can can feel that there is a positive change in my body. Where I am sitting and you are watching me, it's a natural medicine which brings change inside the body forever.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe doctor at the Khewra clinic is Ikhlaq Hussain Bokari.\u003cbr/\u003eBokhari claims there are a number of reasons why the mine is so effective against allergies, but the main one is \"the ionisation of salt, sodium ions and chloride ions. This environment in the air is fully saturated with these ions, naturally\".\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"when the patient breathes in this climate he naturally develops resistance against the allergic asthma.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut all this doesn't come cheaply.\u003cbr/\u003eA 10-day course costs 5,300 rupees (62 US dollars), with 11 hours a day in the caves and the nights spent in a nearby hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eKhewra's treated five hundred people since opening in 2007 and it claims to have a 60 per cent success rate.\u003cbr/\u003eThere have been very few clinical studies to support the growing popularity of salt caves like this and the Khewra clinic is cautious, claiming it refuses to treat people with cystic fibrosis, bronchitis and even ear infections.\u003cbr/\u003eKhewra restricts its therapy to patients whose asthma is triggered by allergies.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the UK this entrance isn't as mysterious as the Khewra mine clinic, but it too is a centre offering relief for people suffering respiratory and skin problems.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause there's a lack of natural salt mines, artificial ones like this are on the increase. \u003cbr/\u003eDirector Sofia Benke says there are a number of advantages over natural mines because the atmosphere can be controlled.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Benke a session lasts one hour and then, depending on how serious the patient's condition is, they return up to a maximum of thirty times.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \" We can adjust the salt concentration in the air during the session. We can also control the temperature and the humidity. And these are the advantages of an artificial salt cave.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBenke believes salt is beneficial because \"it's anti-bacterial, anti-septic and has natural anti-inflammatory properties\". \u003cbr/\u003eAnd she says \"if someone is suffering from asthma, it can reduce the inflammation in the airways of the person\".\u003cbr/\u003eBut the claims being made by practitoners of the therapy are causing some alarm.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medical profession in the UK says more evidence is essential.\u003cbr/\u003eSpecialist asthma nurse Cher Piddock advises the charity Asthma UK.\u003cbr/\u003ePiddock says \"there isn't much evidence, but there is evidence on a very small number of children, that it actually  made the lungs less responsive which means that when those subjects come into contact with something that triggers their asthma, they're less likely to cause the asthma response.
