Close Duerer eyes to statue of the young Abrecht Duerer\u003cbr/\u003eA large exhibition of one of Germany's most famous artists, Albrecht Duerer, opens in Nuremberg today (May 24).\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection focusses on his important and influential paintings up to 1505 - a period of great change for the artist.\u003cbr/\u003eAlbrech Duerer is one of the great artists of the 15th century Northern Renaissance.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is best known for his vast body of religious works, including altar pieces, copper engravings and woodcuts. \u003cbr/\u003eA true Renaissance man, whatever Duerer turned his hand to, he enjoyed success - from his watercolour landscapes, theorist texts, printmaking and mathematics.\u003cbr/\u003eNow - for the first time - a large exhibition in his hometown of Nuremberg is celebrating his early life and work until the year 1505. \u003cbr/\u003eCurator Daniel Hess explains why the years before 1505 are the most important ones in Duerer's artistic life. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It made a lot of sense for us to focus on Duerer's development until the year 1505. His work is very virtuosic, free and very accurate,\" explains Hess.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition brings together over 200 masterpieces from some of the most important museums around the world - the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British library in London and the Uffizi in Florence are just three of the 51 lenders from 12 countries.\u003cbr/\u003eMany oeuvres are shown together in Nuremberg for the first time, and give an idea of the artistic climate of Nuremberg at around 1500. \u003cbr/\u003eNuremberg was the centre of the artistic avant garde. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Duerer's neighbourhood alone the biggest print - and book-publisher, the most famous humanists, and the largest private library of that time in the German-speaking world could be found.\u003cbr/\u003eFour exhibition sections present a range of topics, from Duerer's biography to his position as a role model for modern artists.\u003cbr/\u003eFor curator Daniel Hess, finding first drafts of Albrecht Duerer's paintings and drawings was a fruitless search - not a single one exists. However, other drafts were found showing how Duerer reached his limits but found solutions to overcome them.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We don't have a single first draft of any of the paintings but we have fascinating drafts where he tries to draw complicated figures, fails and reaches his limits. The documents allow you to look over the artists shoulder,\" says Hess.\u003cbr/\u003eDuerer's artworks are virtuoso examples of narrative and dramatic staging and enjoyed unprecedented popularity. \u003cbr/\u003eIn his drive towards attaining the highest artistic perfection, Duerer extended the borders of art and worked to define criteria upon which good art could be
