It is made by genetically modifying  tobacco plants to produce an antibody.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce in the mouth the antibody attaches itself to the bacteria that cause tooth decay  and stops them from sticking to the teeth.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Tom Lehner who led the research team and has spent 25 years searching for  a vaccine thinks this breakthrough could mean an end to the age-old problem of tooth  decay.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"This should protect from colonisation of the organism called streptoccus mutans which  induces caries (decay) and hopefully this might be the beginning of the end of the  dental caries (decay)  problem which, as you know, is a very ancient disease.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Professor Tom Lehner, Guy's Hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tasteless, colourless vaccine was successfully tested on people during a four- month trial. Volunteers received it twice a week for three weeks for a total of six  applications.\u003cbr/\u003eTrials showed that testers who received the vaccine were protected from decay-forming  bacteria for up to four months.\u003cbr/\u003eBut because gum disease is still seen as the biggest problem in dentistry, Professor  Lehner said his medical breakthrough did not mean that people would no longer have to  brush their teeth.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Dental hygiene must not be slackened. For if no other reason that gum disease is  highly dependent on proper dental hygiene. The scientists say they  are really boosting the body's immune system by giving it extra antibodies.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Lehner thinks the technique of genetically engineering plants to produce  vaccines has enormous potential benefits and could lead to the possibility of tackling  other infections.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team think antibodies could now be produced against sexually transmitted  diseases like HIV and against food poisoning bacteria like salmonella and E.coli.\u003cbr/\u003ePlanet Biotechnology, a California-based company that is developing the technology  with Guy's Hospital, are planning larger clinical trials this summer.\u003cbr/\u003eLondon, UK - 29 April, 1998\u003cbr/\u003e1.
