Segolene Royal walking in street\u003cbr/\u003eThe woman who could become France's first female president, Socialist Segolene Royal, is currently campaigning in the second round of the French elections. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the United States, the Democrat politician, Hillary Clinton, is also hoping to get into the record books as America's first woman president.\u003cbr/\u003eBut are French and American voters ready to say \"yes\" to a woman as their leader?\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past the UK has had a female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, while the Germans voted for Angela Merkel as Chancellor.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Chile and Liberia have also elected female presidents.\u003cbr/\u003eSegolene Royal is hoping to become France's first female President. But she's got a long way to go - during voting on 22 April she got 25.9 percent of the vote, while Nicolas Sarkozy took nearly 31.2 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, Royal's put the fact that she is a woman at the forefront of her campaign.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 52-year-old mother of four is the regional premier of Poitou-Charentes.\u003cbr/\u003eHer partner is Francois Hollande, the Socialist Party leader.\u003cbr/\u003eHer popularity soared after she came under attack last year from male politicians from within her own party. \u003cbr/\u003eLast January, one of the liveliest topics of debate on French TV was her high heels, and whether she should have worn them on a trip to visit the slums of Chile. \u003cbr/\u003eRoyal hopes to join the 12 democratically elected women leaders currently heading nations. \u003cbr/\u003eBut some political commentators say however well Segolene does, French voters just aren't ready for a woman President.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the UK, Andrew Pierce, the Telegraph newspaper's political commentator says the French like their women to be mistresses but they do not like them to be leaders. \u003cbr/\u003eBecoming a female political leader isn't that unusual. \u003cbr/\u003eChilean President Michele Bachelet broke the mould in Latin America last year when she was elected leader.\u003cbr/\u003eLiberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf did it in Africa in 2005. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd German voters made Angela Merkel their first female Chancellor in November 2005. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact Merkel's and Royal's careers carry some parallels. \u003cbr/\u003eMerkel was Minister of Women and Youth and later the environment minister in the 1990s. Royal served as environment minister and later minister for schools and families.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Merkel was asked in December how she viewed the fact that a woman was one of France's leading presidential candidates, she replied, \"I can only repeat what I have said very often in reference to myself in Germany - women are human beings too.\"\u003cbr/\u003eUK political commentator, Andrew Pierce, says a female politician has to be strong and cannot show her emotions in public. that up to 90% of people asked in the US said they would elect a well-qualified woman as president. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the streets of Atlanta in the US state of Georgia some thought Hilary would make a good president and would be able to take advice from her husband. \u003cbr/\u003eBut one man said although he'd like a female president he didn't believe the US was ready for it yet. \u003cbr/\u003eCarroll Doherty says he does not think gender is standing in Clinton's way. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the first debate of the 2008 campaign in Orangeburg, South Carolina last week (26 April 2007) Hillary Clinton flashed her anti-war credentials, heaping criticism on President Bush's Iraq policy. \u003cbr/\u003eShe claimed that if Bush did not get the US out of Iraq, she will ensure she
