Tight shot of Double Dutch jumpers\u003cbr/\u003eSkipping is generally perceived as child's play.\u003cbr/\u003eBut double dutch, the popular jump-roping pastime, soon could become a competitive sport in New York City public schools.\u003cbr/\u003eSchool officials say adding double dutch to the calendar should get hundreds of students participating in an enjoyable aerobic activity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe New York Public School Athletic League is considering adding the skipping game to school teams as early as next spring.\u003cbr/\u003eThe activity, often seen on sidewalks in the summer, involves jumpers hopping between two ropes twirled like eggbeaters by turners. \u003cbr/\u003ePlayers earn points based on speed and innovative moves.\u003cbr/\u003eRuth Payne, a retired drug-prevention counsellor and double dutch coach, was a major force behind persuading the athletic league to add the sport to its roster.\u003cbr/\u003eShe came up with the idea as a way to attract more girls to athletics.\u003cbr/\u003ePayne, who has coached neighbourhood teams in Brooklyn for years, says the benefit of the sport is that it's a real team effort that can benefit you in real life.\u003cbr/\u003eBy a number of accounts, double dutch experts believe the sport has its origins with ancient rope spinners who out of necessity had to jump between strands as they worked. \u003cbr/\u003eThe practice was later brought to America by the Dutch who settled the city then called New Amsterdam and would later become New York City. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was the English who coined the name \"double dutch\" when they later settled in New Amsterdam and saw the Dutch people there in pairs performing what might have seemed to them an odd exercise.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has been a competitive sport in New York since the 1970s when a police detective worked with physical education instructors to develop rules and a scoring system.\u003cbr/\u003eThe proposed season in school would start in March and go until May. Practice for the teams will begin in August. \u003cbr/\u003eDouble dutch is scored on a point system, with compulsory, speed and freestyle components.\u003cbr/\u003eThe compulsory section has several requirements, such as flips, fancy footwork and a cheer, an ending that the\u003cbr/\u003ewhole team takes part in.\u003cbr/\u003eOsayi Owie, a Brooklyn double dutch jumper and member of the 'Jammin' Jumpers', says while the port may look easy, it's a speedy and tiring activity that requires a lot of endurance.\u003cbr/\u003eNew York City School sports officials hope to start with 10 to 15 double dutch teams spread among the five boroughs.\u003cbr/\u003eThey will then be able to compete for a city-wide championship my next year. \u003cbr/\u003eDouble dutch has spread beyond its base in inner-city black neighbourhoods and is especially popular in Japan, whose teams have won a number of recent tournaments. \u003cbr/\u003eTeams from around the globe can compete in tournaments like the
