Farmers who using it for precision agriculture, real estate agents that just want a new perspective on the property that they are developing. You could say you could develop individual products for each of those markets but instead, why not create one system that everybody can use and then customise according to their individual applications.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe drone company is now part of an emerging wave of Chinese startups in fields of robotics, clean energy and telecoms. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Communist Party hopes they will transform the country from the world's low-wage factory to a creator of profitable technology.\u003cbr/\u003eGuangdong Province, where Shenzhen is located, is home to several other budding drone companies, including Ehang.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was officially founded in April.\u003cbr/\u003eLocated in an abandoned theme park on the outskirts of Guangzhou, the young startup clashes in style with that of DJI's more polished atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eEhang's Research and Development unit is a big bright room where scruffy-looking twenty-something college graduates tweak, tinker and experiment on dozens of unfinished drones. \u003cbr/\u003eThe startup launched a crowd-funding campaign on website Indiegogo in November to fund their new 'Ghost' drone.\u003cbr/\u003eIn less than six weeks, they raised over $600,000 USD, six times more than their initial goal.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Think about drones as the centre of the \"Internet of Things\" in the air,\" says 25-year-old Derrick Xiong, a co-founder of Ehang.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's like your Wi-Fi router at home, it connects everything. So drones, in the air itself, can carry a lot of stuff, not just a camera for aero-filming. It carries a lot of different equipment, it can be combined with Oculus or Google Glass or any sort of smart watch. Any kind of input or output devices. So, I would say the potential of drones is huge.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe most basic Ghost drone sells for $375 USD without a camera, while the more advanced version, which includes a GoPro camera and a gimbal (pivoted support), sells for $879 USD.\u003cbr/\u003eTo make sure that drones are accessible to everybody, Ehang's engineers developed what Derrick Xiong describes as 'Avatar mode'.\u003cbr/\u003eA smart phone is linked to the drone and acts as its replacement: if the person flying the drone tilts the phone forward, the drone flies forward, and so on, making the whole experience simple enough that it's within a beginner's reach. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth DJI and Ehang say most of their business happens outside China. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Xiong, the Chinese market is not yet \"mature enough to generate huge sales\".\u003cbr/\u003eDespite that, the growth in drone sales faces technical and regulatory hurdles worldwide. \u003cbr/\u003eDue to safety concerns, US regulators ban drones for most commercial uses.\u003cbr/\u003eIn France, three people were arrested in November after drone flights near nuclear power plants prompted security fears.\u003cbr/\u003eIn China, where most airspace is reserved for the military, drones are allowed in the small portion of the skies allotted to civilian use, but operators are required to avoid air routes and radio frequencies used by pilots.\u003cbr/\u003eXiong thinks that drone companies first and foremost need to make sure they are selling a safe product. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The drone technology is getting more and more well developed, to make sure that a drone doesn't crash,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In terms of the mechanical mistakes, in terms of the obstacle avoidance, we really have to focus a lot on these technologies to make sure that people's normal lives won't be affected by drones. I think that's the key.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDrones will profoundly affect many sectors and even governments are showing an interest in drones for rescue operations or surveillance purposes. \u003cbr/\u003eDJI and rivals including France's Parrot SA and 3D Robotics Inc. of the United States foresee demand for drones to shoot movies and news footage, survey farmland or oilfields, inspect power lines and oil pipelines and give firefighters a bird's eye view of burning buildings. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring rescue operations in the aftermath of the earthquake last August in Yunnan Province, in southern China, the local government hired a drone (a Tarot 680 Pro) in order survey the damage.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This product is changing the way people do journalism in Central America as much as the way people are fighting fires in Germany or monitoring wildlife in Africa,\" says Perry.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So it's amazing on an international scale, not just a local one.\" \u003cbr/\u003eDJI insist their focus is on consumer and commercial drones. \u003cbr/\u003eDerrick Xiong claims Ehang was approached by a Guangzhou policeman interested in their product.\u003cbr/\u003eSince then, research has spread to include cameras, software for imaging and control and stabilisation systems. \u003cbr/\u003eDrone companies are progressively opening their software development process to outsiders to create additional tools. \u003cbr/\u003eSwiss software maker, Pix4D - for example - has designed an application to transform images shot by DJI or other drones into three-dimensional maps. \u003cbr/\u003eHuawei say their next smart phone model will have an app to control a DJI drone and receive live video.\u003cbr/\u003eEhang has developed a \"Follow me\" mode where the drone can follow a person using the GPS system located in their smart phone.\u003cbr/\u003eSaying the industry has taken off would appear to be an understatement.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eShenzhen, Guangdong Province, China - 15 December 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
