Close-up of bumper sticker, truck drives away\u003cbr/\u003eA small non-profit company in Cambodia is turning used cooking oil into high quality, environmentally friendly biodiesel.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a bid to help cut down the air pollution caused by petroleum diesel fuel, which has a high sulphur content.\u003cbr/\u003ePetroleum diesel is widely used in Cambodia, particularly in heavy trucks and vans, but also in many older cars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe diesel sold in Cambodia is a high-sulphur fuel, that is banned from sale in more developed countries.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say diesel fuel is a big contributor to air pollution in the country, which is a cause of lung disease and other respiratory diseases. \u003cbr/\u003eIn an effort to provide a clean alternative to petroleum diesel, Naga Biodiesel was set up in 2008. \u003cbr/\u003eAt this small factory on the outskirts of Siem Reap, the company produces high quality, eco-friendly biodiesel made from used cooking oil.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the oil is supplied free of charge by local restaurants, who then buy back the biodiesel at a 40 percent discount.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe cooking oil is washed, and cleaned to remove contaminants before being processed into diesel. \u003cbr/\u003eTim Waterfield, Founder and Director of Naga Biofuels explains: \"We put it through a mist wash where we mist the fuel with water to get any soap or contaminants out of the fuel. Then we run it through a finished wash, a bubble wash, to get the fuel completely clean. And then finally we run the biodiesel through a drying process to make sure there's no water in our finished fuel, and then we run it through a diesel filter, and we have our final product, which is clean biodiesel that's ready to use in any engine.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the product is cleaner on engines and the air quality in rapidly growing Siam Reap. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It keeps your engine cleaner, it cleans the injectors very nicely, it keeps everything very clean,\" says Tim Waterfield, the Founder and Director of Naga Biofuels.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The exhaust is much healthier to breathe, much nicer to breathe and it's a superior product really in every way to regular diesel fuel.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTo make biodiesel, used cooking oil is poured into a barrel connected to stainless steel tanks. \u003cbr/\u003eMethanol is then added as well as potassium hydroxide, creating a chemical reaction known as 'transesterification' which produces both biodiesel and glycerin.\u003cbr/\u003eThe glycerin can be used as a degreaser to clean oily hands and engines. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the biodiesel has been mixed it is cleaned to remove any contaminants. \u003cbr/\u003eOutput currently stands at about seven thousand litres per month, most of which is supplied to businesses in the local area. \u003cbr/\u003eThe degreaser is popular with local mechanics who use it instead of gasoline to clean oil off their hands. \u003cbr/\u003eNaga collects used cooking oil from restaurants all over Siem Reap.\u003cbr/\u003eFor businesses like restaurant chain Blue Pumpkin, giving their used cooking oil to Naga makes sense, says Managing Director Arnaud Curtat.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"They come with their own plastic container, it's very clean, very professional. We don't lose time having to think about where we will dispose of our used cooking oil. It's much easier,\" he says.  \u003cbr/\u003eNaga delivers biodiesel to its customers all over Siem Reap free of charge using 30-litre plastic containers which are recycled. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has built up a loyal local following of customers like La Keng from the Sangkheum Center for Children. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Their organisation is outside of town so they're off the electrical grid. They run their biodiesel and all their vehicles are run on one hundred percent biodiesel,\" says Waterfield.\u003cbr/\u003eLa Keng, Sangkheum Centre for Children administrator, adds: \"I use this biodiesel because this biodiesel is excellent quality. I use it in all of our generators and vehicles and it works very well. There's less smoke from the exhaust. When you use biodiesel there is never a problem when you start the engine. And it also protects the engine very well.\"\u003cbr/\u003eScott Coats, Executive Director of Community development organisation Trailblazer Foundation in Siem Reap, is also a fan of biodiesel.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The smell's better, engine's maintenance costs are reduced. It's been working well so we're real happy with the results,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eNaga Biofuels is trying to increase production to 10-thousand litres by 2013, with plans to distribute it in
