The American actress and star of the new movie \"De-Lovely\" says the lack of action to stop the genocide perpetrated by Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s was \"the most shocking, appalling, disturbing\" thing she had ever heard of in her life. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's currently touring South-East Asia in her role as ambassador for the HIV group YouthAIDS. A number of other Hollywoood stars are also in the region to attend the XV International AIDS Conference, which starts on Sunday in Bangkok.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Thai Nippon Rubber factory near Pattaya in Thailand, there was an unusual welcoming committee for the Hollywood star. The firm produces top of the line latex condoms for the international and domestic markets.  As an ambassador for YouthAIDS Ashley Judd was there to raise awareness of the importance of condoms in the fight against the spread of HIV. She briefly toured the factory, and talked with staff as they were turning out some of the millions of condoms they produce. \u003cbr/\u003eJudd has been involved with the organisation for several years. Previously she's promoted the cause with singer Bono in the US. \u003cbr/\u003eA United Nations report this week warned that Thailand is facing an upsurge in the disease, despite its acknowledged successes in the past. Particularly at risk are young people who it's said are using condoms less often than in the past. YouthAIDS targets the young, so her visit was timely and her message clear; practise safe sex.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Conference, which opens on Sunday, has the theme \"access for all\". As far as Judd was concerned, it was an important message for the Western world to heed. But what really moved the star was what she saw and heard in Cambodia, earlier in the week. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country is Asia's worst for HIV, but it was an earlier plague - that of the communist Khmer Rouge - that shocked her. Under the ultra-communist Pol Pot, an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians died; around a quarter of the population. The way Ashley Judd saw it, not enough was done by the US to stop it.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother Hollywood star is also in Thailand, pursuing the theme of the fight against AIDS. British actor Rupert Everett is a goodwill ambassador for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria; a private foundation that raises money to fight the diseases. \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this week in Bangkok he gave his impressions of the situation and of the inequalities\u003cbr/\u003ebetween what treatment is available to the wealthy and the poor. Like Judd, the 45 year old star of \"My Best Friend's Wedding\", was also in Cambodia this week where he met with AIDS patients at a hospice. \u003cbr/\u003eThailand has about 600,000 people living with the virus. There were an estimated 19,000 new infections last year. Other stars confirmed to attend the Conference in the coming days include singer Dionne Warwick.
