Schalit talking to media \u003cbr/\u003eEU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Monday met with the parents of Sergeant Gilad Schalit, an Israeli soldier who has been held by militants in Gaza for over four years. \u003cbr/\u003eAshton held talks with Aviva and Noam Schalit in Jerusalem's King David hotel and assured them that their son's release is part of what the European Union is demanding from Hamas.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said after the meeting that it was \"absolutely essential that we never forget that the needs of this young man are part of our desire to see peace in this area\".\u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday, Ashton who is in the region on an official tour, visited the blockaded Gaza Strip to gauge the impact of Israel's easing of its embargo on the Hamas-ruled territory.\u003cbr/\u003eShe called on Israel to go beyond easing its embargo and throw open Gaza's borders. \u003cbr/\u003eAshton also urged Hamas to release Schalit. \u003cbr/\u003eShe explained on Monday that supporting ordinary people in Gaza is in a way supporting the process of Schalit's release.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The more that everyone realises the situation can not go on and call for his release I hope the day will come nearer that he will be released\", she said. \u003cbr/\u003eSchalit's father, Noam, called on the European Union to \"act in an unequivocal way to bring the release of Gilad\".\u003cbr/\u003eAshton is the most senior diplomat to visit Gaza since Israel announced earlier this month that it would ease its three-year-old blockade to allow most consumer goods into the coastal strip of 1.5 (m) million Palestinians.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael started restricting movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza after the 2006 capture of Gilad Schalit, by Hamas-allied militants. \u003cbr/\u003eA year later, when the Islamic militant Hamas overran Gaza, Israel, backed by Egypt, imposed a fuller closure, allowing in only a few dozen types of humanitarian goods like basic foods and medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement of easing of the blockade came after an international outcry over Israel's deadly raid of a blockade-busting flotilla in May.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Israel continues to ban virtually all exports and restricts the import of badly needed construction supplies and raw materials for industry. And along with Egypt, it prevents most Gazans from travelling.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael, citing security concerns, has signalled that it is not willing to completely open border crossings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Schalit family launched a 12-days cross country protest campaign following the easement of the blockade. \u003cbr/\u003eSchalit's parents said the Israeli government has
