Close of frog going under roots of tree and out of shot\u003cbr/\u003eAdopt a frog and put pais to dengue fever, that's the unconventional idea touted by a councillor in the central Argentine province of San Luis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe frog's appetite for the disease carrying mosquito is being promoted as a clean-cut biological control, and an alternative to the chemical methods currently being used to combat the country's epidemic.\u003cbr/\u003eFrogs - possibly the answer to dengue fever. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Argentina, a country more commonly recognised for the sacred cow, due its resident's love of meat, the small interior city of San Luis is adopting the frog as its provincial hero. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the streets of Argentina are in the grips of a dengue fever outbreak, frogs are being touted as the antidote. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal Councillor Daniel Sosa has taken up the campaign, explaining that the green rangers eat over 15 thousand insects per month, including mosquitoes - the main carriers of the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he wants people to adopt a frog and forget the widely used chemical controls that disrupt the ecological equilibrium.\u003cbr/\u003eSosa is not selling the frogs but he is giving them away, encouraging locals to put them in their gardens in a collective effort to boost population numbers.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile not everyone has been jumping at the prospect of taking one home, local residents have been receiving them with amused curiosity.\u003cbr/\u003eSome say the proposal is a simple step in combating the disease, while others more reluctantly welcome the hopping mosquito monitors.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a local newspaper a farmer in a nearby village had the original idea.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was convinced the repopulation of the amphibians in the heavily forested area would provide a clean answer to the long legged mosquito.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the region having large numbers of frogs in the past, today there are very few as a consequence of changes in their natural habitat and years of fumigation.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile artificial controls like pesticides can be a quick fix, frogs and toads feed on the larvae of mosquitoes, getting to the root of the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents like Miguel Angel became involved in the movement by encouraging the notion of people breeding frogs in their backyards.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that in contrast to the toxic methods widely being used to combat the mosquito, a frog is a friend to the health of people.\u003cbr/\u003eMassive spraying in recent years against the bloodsuckers is one of the reasons for the low numbers of amphibians in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eNewer strains of the disease carrying mosquito, the Aedes aegypti, have become resistant to the chemical controls - but the amphibian population continues to decline.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile pesticides destroy everything, including flora and fauna they are also often linked with harmful affects to humans. \u003cbr/\u003eFrogs are widely recognised sentinels of the environment and their absence can be seen as a signal that something is wrong.\u003cbr/\u003eGonzalo Basile is the Argentine President of Medicos del Mundo, the global health humanitarian organisation. He explains that the destruction of the environment has played a big part in the growth of dengue. \u003cbr/\u003eHe adds that we need to think about a full mosquito management strategy that takes biological controls into account.\u003cbr/\u003eArgentinaÄÅ¼Ës expansion as a global bread basket has also played its part in creating a fertile environment for the growth of dengue.\u003cbr/\u003eIndiscriminate land clearing activities for the fervent growing of soya have disrupted large parts of the country's ecological balance. \u003cbr/\u003eThe northern province of Chaco, one of Argentina's poorest regions, is the area worst hit by dengue in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eWith over a third of the population below the bread line the most needy are the most affected.\u003cbr/\u003eBad sanitation and drainage have helped to create the problem, and lack of sufficient health care is compounding the deathly effects of dengue.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's still not a vaccine to treat the disease known as 'break bone fever', because of the pain it causes.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the growing chorus of enthusiasm for biological controls there are some words of caution.\u003cbr/\u003eHead of the biology department at the University of San Luis, Ana Brigada says if we are not careful we might end up replacing one problem with an even greater one. \u003cbr/\u003eWhether frog princes, or pawns in a misguided plan, the amphibian residents of San Luis have been well and truly thrown into the spotlight.\u003cbr/\u003e- As of June 10th 2009 there
