Various of wine tasting
Wine sales for 2006 showed that China, the United States and Australia are all starting to give the more traditional markets such as Spain and France a run for their money.
French government figures showed dwindling demand for French wine abroad was throwing the industry into crisis.
Even so, a small vineyard in Paris is thriving, along with vineyards in England and those run by monks in the United States.
When you think of French vineyards it is often the vineyards in the regions of Champagne, Cote du Rhone or Burgundy that spring to mind.
But there are in fact vineyards all over France - even in the heart of the capital city Paris.
Montmartre in Paris is famous for many things; it's steep streets, colourful rides and of course the magnificent Sacre Coeur cathedral.
But just streets away from the cathedral is a wine producing vineyard.
The Montmartre vineyard is the largest of four vineyards in the city of Paris.
Oenologist (expert wine maker) Francis Gourdin says the vineyard has been around for a while.
It was first mentioned in documents back in the year 944.
Gourdin says the wine produced from grapes grown at the vineyard bears similarities to wines from several other French regions.
A select group of grape pickers take care of the harvesting of the grapes.
The vineyard gives around 500 litres (132 US gallons or 110 British gallons) of wine, which makes some one thousand 50 cl (0.8 pint) bottles.
The wine from the vineyard is cellared in caves then when it ready to drink, the wine is sold and the money raised given to charity.
Its been some time since European wine producers first faced competition from 'New World' wine-growing counties such as Chile and Australia, but now British wine drinkers are discovering a new vintage, and one that's grown closer to home.
Global warming is said to be helping grapes to grow in milder cross-Channel climates, and the UK's wines are most definitely on the up.
Former Royal Air Force pilot, Bob Lindo, started the Camel Valley vineyard from scratch twenty-five years ago with his wife and family in the South West of England,
In a good year, Camel Valley will produce around 15-thousand bottles of wine, the emphasis increasingly being on sparkling varieties.
The vineyard is on a sunny, south facing slope above the River Camel, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) west of Bodmin in Cornwall.
Bob Lindo's aim has been to combine traditional vineyard practices with a New World approach to wine making to ensure high quality white, red and sparkling wines from their 8,000 vines.
The extraordinarily hot summer of 2006 has meant the grape crop is up 50 percent on last year - off the same number of vines - and Bob says demand for his wines just keeps growing.
A variety of grapes are grown here, mainly Seyval, Reichensteiner, Bacchus, Triomphe, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir.
The Lindo's approach of growing a variety of grapes helps lower the 'flowering risk', where a crop can be ruined by heavy rainfall during the flowering season.
It also means they can give their customers the kind of wine they are looking for.
With global temperatures said to be rising, its thought that English wines will increasingly compare well to those from more warmer climates.
Scientists at the UK Metrological office say that recent research undertaken in the Midlands and East Anglia show that since 1960 average temperatures have increased by one degree celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit).
Bob Lindo says the increase in temperatures means they no longer need polytunnel green houses to grow the grapes.
Britain's modern-day wine business produces an average of 1.9 (m) million bottles annually, a small amount compared with the 7 (b) billion bottles manufactured in France each year.
But in July, European wine makers prepared to destroy their vineyards to help solve the problem of over-production.
The European Commission proposed that one-eighth of Europe's vineyards are dug up over five years, as part of a shake up of the Common Agricultural Policy.
Commissioners hope the move will tackle Europe's growing wine lake caused by a drop in wine consumption, and stiff competition from the New World wine growing regions of Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, United States and Latin America.
France, Italy and Spain are currently the world's top wine producers by volume.
In Spain seventy five million hectolitres of lower quality wines will be assigned for so-called 'crisis distillation' this year.
Joan Aguado, head of Catalonia's Wine and Vine Institute says that wines from the New World are not subject to such rigorous standards as European wines giving them an unfair advantage.
In the Basque region of La Rioja's wine growing area, the idea of combining tourism and the wine industry has been taken one step further with the construction of a luxury hotel, designed by the world famous architect Frank Gehry at Marques de Riscal winery.
Cheers... Sante... Salut... or as they say in Hebrew, "l'haim" - to life - that's what many people said in Tel Aviv when annual figures showed a record breaking year for Israeli wine.
And Israeli vintners hosted their first ever international wine competition, which had some people in the industry claiming that Israeli wine is back on the world map after 3,000 years.
Israel has a 3,000 year history of viticulture which is mentioned dozens of times throughout both the old and new testaments of the Bible.
Jewish rituals from Sabbath meals to weddings and religious feasts require a glass of wine, making fermented grape juice rank up there with milk and honey as foodstuff synonymous with the Holy Land.
The grapes are ripening on the vineyards of Israel and times are good for the country's wine industry.
The Israeli Wine Institute says exports grew by 45 per cent in 2005 above to the previous year.
Producers shipped merlots, cabernets and sauvignon blancs to the value US$9.5 million (m) dollars.
Almost half of the exported bottles found their way onto tables in the United States.
In June fans of the Israeli grapes held an international competition in Tel Aviv - Terra Vino 2006.
Here hundreds of bottles of wine from Israel and around the world were judged.
The competition was seen as an important step in introducing Israeli vintages to international connoisseurs.
Terra Vino 2006 brought together forty expert tasters from sixteen countries - among them gourmands from world famous producers from Australia, Chile, France and Spain.
They judged 350 bottles of wine with hidden labels divided into eight categories according to retail price.
After checking for colour and having a good sniff of the product, they taste the wine by swirling it around the mouth and finally, discretely spitting it out.
In 2006 Israelis consumed 65 million bottles of wine, of which 75-percent were produced locally.
The Catholic church has a long connection with wine and vineyards.
Catholics believe that during the sacrament of the Eucharist, bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of Jesus Christ, signifying his sacrifice on the cross.
In May a community of cistercian monks became the first Roman Catholic monastery in the United States to make its own wine as a way of financing their devout way of life.
Secluded behind the walls of a Northern California monastery, two dozen cistercian monks follow the teachings of Saint Benedict, rising before dawn each morning to pray.
The abbey of New Clairvaux was founded in 1955 and named in honour of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12th century French church leader.
The trappist religious order has a long history of farming.
The monks here spend each day enhancing both spirit and soil.
But they were struggling to meet the day to day finances of running the community.
So last year the monks joined forces with Aimee Sunseri, a fifth generation wine maker, to become the first Roman Catholic monastery in the United States to grow and bottle its own wine.
The vineyard sits on 600 acres of land once owned by former california governor Leland Stanford (born March 9 1824 - died June 21 1893).
The collaboration has been success for the clerics, sustaining them both financially and spiritually.
The monk's wine-making is a blend of traditional methods devised in the old world vineyards of Europe and the latest wine bottling technology, like automated bottle fillers and corkers.
They're currently using the former governor's 100-year-old brick wine cellar to produce, age and bottle their wines.
But despite the seclusion of monastic life, the monks enjoy their work, and enjoy working with outsiders.
The monks hope sales of their wine will help keep the monastery open for decades to come.

<button aria-expanded='false'
