Close-up of banner reading: (English) \"Fighting Poverty in Asia and the Pacific\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs the leaders of Southeast Asian nations met in Manila on Monday at the start of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit, two Philippine-based multilateral institutions considered some of the issues affecting people in Asia.\u003cbr/\u003ePoverty continues to be one of the biggest issues for Asia, said the Managing Director of the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB).\u003cbr/\u003eIn the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis ADB published the Asian Development Outlook of 2000 which considered the transformation of Asian economies.\u003cbr/\u003eADB noted that the tale of poverty reduction in Asia had turned into \"a tale of two Asias - one of success and one of failure,\" with areas of South Asia seriously lagging behind other parts of the region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"failure\" side reflected the poor, which accounted to two-thirds of the total in the developing world in 2000 or about ten (m) million people. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report also said, \"about 900 (m) million people live on a mere dollar-a-day income\".\u003cbr/\u003eADB Managing Director Rajat Nag admits, seven years after the report was published, the statistics still hold true.  \u003cbr/\u003eAsia has prosperity but it also has poverty, said Nag.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That is why we have always talked about the two faces of Asia, and it is I think a challenge for all of us to make sure that the two faces converge.
