Various of Greenpeace event - activists with placards listing Pacific islands that do not appear on large globe inside the conference venue UPSOUND: Chanting (English) 'Keep the islands on the map.'\u003cbr/\u003ePeople from Pacific Islands who believe their island states will be submerged by rising sea levels caused by climate change made impassioned pleas at the Copenhagen climate conference on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a UN-sponsored scientific network, says seas are rising by about three millimetres (0.12 inches) a year. \u003cbr/\u003eIts worst-case scenario sees the oceans rising by at least 60 centimeters (two feet) by 2100, from heat expansion and the runoff of melted land ice. \u003cbr/\u003eBritish scientists say current emissions are matching the IPCC's worst case.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch sea-level rises particularly threaten nations on low-lying coral atolls, like Tuvalu and Kiribati in the Pacific, and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready in Kiribati, islanders are struggling to save roads, houses and public buildings from increasingly threatening \"king tides\" every two weeks. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir wells have begun turning brackish with seawater and one village has been abandoned in waist-high water, according to the country's conference delegates.\u003cbr/\u003eBesides sea walls and other immediate measures, said Bertrim Rimon, head of the Kiribati President's Office, the islanders have worked out a \"midterm\" plan, to concentrate the population of 110,000 on three islands that would be built up higher with international aid. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople now live on 32 atolls spread over two (m) million square miles (kilometres) of ocean.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Second World War was not my war, but I was a victim.
