You would be forgiven for...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eMumbai's sleek new airport terminal is home to seven-thousand pieces of Indian art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two billion US dollar transport hub has become a haven of culture, in the bustling and overcrowded financial capital. \u003cbr/\u003eYou would be forgiven for thinking that this was a museum or an art gallery.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Mumbai airport's new Terminal 2 building - home to India's largest public art programme, titled 'Jaya He,' meaning \"glory to thee.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHead-turning artefacts are everywhere you go here - creating a cultural ambience in a very modern structure. \u003cbr/\u003eSanjay Reddy, managing director of GVK Group, the leader of the consortium that developed Mumbai airport, thinks that other airport developers will emulate the concept. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is something which is very unique, and we think will establish a new way of building the airports globally and create a new benchmark,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In addition to that I think we also have to realise that for a city like Mumbai and for India, this is a major new development, and like somebody told me, once this airport changes, it will change Mumbai for ever.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the most popular displays at the airport is an interactive musical installation, where visitors can make music as they play with water.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen you place your hand over the water flowing out of the vents, each of the flows produces sound in a different note.\u003cbr/\u003eThe airport also has a three kilometre, multi-storey Art Wall, illuminated by skylights and embellished with thousands of pieces of of artwork from every region of India.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wall runs along the departure and arrival gates.\u003cbr/\u003eArt work on display is divided into six segments - \"India Elemental,\" \"India Seamless,\" \"India Greets,\" \"India's Silent Sentinels,\" \"India Moves\" and \"India Global.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMumbai is also home to India's Bollywood film industry, and an entire wall is devoted to colourful life size portraits of famous Bollywood personalities.\u003cbr/\u003eBut putting this vast collection of art, from all over the country, on show was no easy feat, says Rajeev Sethi, one of South Asia's leading art curators.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that a lot of the challenges lay in being able to, in a very constrained environment, the things have to be put up overnight, things that were as heavy as ten tons, and those of a jewel like, in an area that have to be put up with very little time in hand. The actual implementation was difficult,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection on display includes works with local cultural references and those evoking India's traditional temple architecture.\u003cbr/\u003eSharing the space with these are the gently swaying wind chimes installed by Aurelio, the director of a vocational training centre called \"Svaram\" in South India, which specialises in making musical instruments and research on the \"healing\" power of sound.\u003cbr/\u003eOriginally from Austria, Aurelio has been living in Auroville in Pondicherry for more than two decades.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am actually very happy that India shows the world that there is a possibility of creating in public spaces, to bring back individual touches and personality, that this is just not (a) new trend, cool empty spaces, but this place is full of soul, I mean, one hundred artists working, and there are all different themes, and different the best thing is also (that) there is a combination between contemporary, traditional, it's blurred, it's just creativity,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It does not matter where the artists are coming from. There's such an amazing blend.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe art works include centuries-old artefacts sourced from 27 Indian states as well as pieces by 100 contemporary artists.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong them are specially commissioned site installations like a 72-foot mural, an interactive sculpture and mixed-media works focusing on the theme of travel and memories.\u003cbr/\u003eSethi says he wants the airport to give a positive impression of India to travellers. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Airports are liminal (transitional) places, where when you come in and you go out. If there's something that you relish, you are, you feel less tired, you retain it, and its your first impression and your last. So, I do feel that people should feel they are in India, and not in Shanghai or in Dubai,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 700,000-square feet retail and gateway areas feature more than 1,000 lotus flower-shaped chandeliers with traditional mirror mosaic work created by local artists.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the terminal is four storeys, interconnecting light slots and multi-storey light wells ensure that light penetrates into the lower floors of the building and opening windows to the surrounding city and landscape.\u003cbr/\u003eAt dusk, illuminated from within, the terminal glows like a sculpted chandelier.\u003cbr/\u003eIts annual capacity of 40 million passengers, up from about 30 million now, is likely to be reached within just five years.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the project stalled over disputes, Mumbai lost its longtime status as India's busiest airport to the national capital New Delhi, where another newly constructed terminal had some 34 million passengers last year versus Mumbai's 30 million. \u003cbr/\u003eThe terminal was built under the country's airport privatisation programme that began in 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television \u003cbr/\u003eMumbai, India - 10 January 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
