Some retailers are reporting beef sales are...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eGerman/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eGerman retailers say they've managed to rebuild consumer confidence in beef following the \"mad cow disease\" -- or B-S-E -- scare by buying and selling only the home-produced product. \u003cbr/\u003eSome retailers are reporting beef sales are now back up to 70 percent of their pre-crisis level , following a disastrous 50 percent fall in late March after the BSE scare broke in Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's good news for  producers in eastern Germany who are now providing much of the beef previously imported from abroad.\u003cbr/\u003eSales of beef in German supermarkets were badly hit by the British government's announcement of a possible link between B-S-E and the human equivalent of the disease -- C-J-D.\u003cbr/\u003eOvernight, retail sales of beef were slashed by up to 50 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eConsumer confidence in beef was almost destroyed and retailers have had to rethink their sales strategy. \u003cbr/\u003eSupermarket chains in Berlin have virtually stopped buying imported beef.\u003cbr/\u003eIrish and French sales have been hit hardest.\u003cbr/\u003eThe supermarket chain Meyer Beck switched supplier overnight, cancelling annual imports of 1200 tonnes of Irish beef and turning to local farmers for supplies:\u003cbr/\u003eDue to the BSE debate, and this includes all traders, I have to say that whoever claims that there has been no affect on sales is lying. This advertising with this 'We' feeling is showing a great deal of success in Brandenburg and in Berlin.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION:   Detlef Spaete- Meat Buyer at Meyer Beck\u003cbr/\u003eThe collapse of communism in eastern Germany saw the devastation of the beef industry there.\u003cbr/\u003eBeef stocks have dropped to a quarter of 1990 levels.\u003cbr/\u003eBut farmers in eastern Germany have sensed that the tide is changing in their favour. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal consumers are turning to them for beef they feel safe to eat.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd a government programme has seen recent rapid investment in beef cattle production.\u003cbr/\u003eBrandenburg has now 720-thousand head of beef cattle, one cow for every two citizens.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd with many dairy producers expanding into beef production, this total is bound to rise rapidly.\u003cbr/\u003eThe west German owners of this abattoir outside Berlin built three such slaughterhouses in the early 1990's. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo are approaching full capacity, with management seriously considering restarting the\u003cbr/\u003ethird. \u003cbr/\u003eWith local farmers slowly catching up on total demand, management here are confident that they will remain in possession of the market should the ban on British beef exports be lifted.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have to say that the positive thing which has come for us out of the whole affair, is that the consumers, especially the larger retail buyers, lay great importance on knowing where the beef comes from. and we have the possibility to determine and to document the origin. And the consumer really only wants local beef.
