Their protest came a day after Norway's National Fish...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eNatural Sound \u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace activists have clashed with Norwegian whale hunters. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 40 members of the environmental group tried to stop whaling ships leaving Kristiansand harbour. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir protest came a day after Norway's National Fish Sales Co-operative offered a subsidy to encourage the sale of whale meat.\u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace and Norwegian whalers clash again.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crew of the whaler in Kristiansand harbour hit back as the environmental activists try to stop them setting sail.\u003cbr/\u003eHoses were turned on the campaigners and blows struck.\u003cbr/\u003eOther activists remained in the water with buoys blocking the ships' exit and held up a banner reading 'Norway Stop Whaling.'\u003cbr/\u003eThe Greenpeace members eventually gave up their struggle after three hours when police arrived.\u003cbr/\u003eThree people were arrested. All were later freed.\u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace was outraged this year when Norway nearly doubled the hunters' annual quota from 232 to 425 minke whales.\u003cbr/\u003eThis came despite the meat surplus and uncertainty over how many minke whales there are in the waters off Norway.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least half the meat brought in this year available remains unsold since the season opened May 20.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, Greenpeace claims  50 to 100 tons of meat remains unsold from last year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe whaling industry admits it is hard to sell all the meat at home, and that no one wants blubber.\u003cbr/\u003eKristiansand, Norway (14 June 1996)\u003cbr/\u003e1.
