support for free trade. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a top Beijing official said change already was coming, and complained that Americans fail to understand China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exchanges at the start of a two-day gathering in Beijing, billed as a long-range \"strategic economic dialogue\", highlighted the challenge facing Paulson if he wants to mollify American business groups and Democrats in Congress who are demanding changes to rein in China's soaring trade surpluses.\u003cbr/\u003ePaulson, who is leading a delegation that includes Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and four other Cabinet secretaries, argued that a more flexible currency, more open markets and other changes are in China's own interest and crucial to maintaining free trade.\u003cbr/\u003eHis Chinese counterpart, Wu Yi, welcomed the chance to build \"mutual trust.\" But she complained that Americans fail to understand China and said that could damage relations.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's trade surplus with the United States has mounted despite American pressure for changes and Beijing's repeated statements that\u003cbr/\u003eit wants more balanced trade.\u003cbr/\u003eThe export surge propelled China's economic growth to 10.7 percent for the first nine months of this year. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also has nudged up the Chinese currency, the yuan, which on Thursday hit its highest level since Beijing began easing controls in July 2005, partly in response to American prodding. \u003cbr/\u003eChinese stock markets also rose to a five-year high.\u003cbr/\u003eUS manufacturers complain that continued government controls keep the yuan undervalued, giving China's exporters an unfair price advantage. \u003cbr/\u003eChinese officials say they plan eventually to let the yuan trade freely, but they say the country's fragile banks and financial industries could not stand the shock of a sudden change.       \u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, Bernanke reportedly told officials at the talks that China would benefit from allowing the yuan to rise, which could fuel more sustainable growth.\u003cbr/\u003ePaulson has tried to downplay expectations of breakthroughs in this week's talks, describing them as the start of a long-term discussion.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, the US Commerce Department reported that the US trade deficit with China in November rose by 6.1 percent to 24.4 (b) billion US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US deficit with China is running at an annual rate of 229 (b) billion US dollars, far above last year's 202 (b) billion US dollar deficit, an all-time high for any country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two sides are also expected to discuss piracy. \u003cbr/\u003eBeijing announced on the eve of the talks that it had launched an anti-piracy campaign targeting producers and distributors of illegally copied movies, music and other goods.\u003cbr/\u003eChina is believed to be the world's leading source of pirated goods ranging from Hollywood movies to designer clothes, sports equipment and even medicines. \u003cbr/\u003eAmerican officials say Chinese piracy costs legitimate producers up to 50 (b) billion US dollars a year in lost potential
