Various of protesters performing exercises\u003cbr/\u003eNearly 400 members of the religious organisation Falun Gong demonstrated in Washington D-C on Friday against alleged human rights abuses by the Chinese government. \u003cbr/\u003eThe silent demonstration took place in a park opposite the White House. \u003cbr/\u003eThe marchers are conducting a two day protest in the country's capital to raise awareness of the plight of Falun Gong practitioners in China. \u003cbr/\u003eFriday's demonstration commemorates the second anniversary of Beijing's crackdown on members of the sect.\u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong attracted millions of followers in the 1990s with its mix of slow-motion exercises, Eastern philosophies and the ideas of founder Li Hongzhi, a former government clerk. \u003cbr/\u003eBy some estimates, its followers at one point outnumbered the 64.5 million members of the Chinese Communist Party.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group has since taken root in the United States, Australia, Singapore and South Korea. \u003cbr/\u003eTaiwan is believed to have the biggest following outside China, with 100-thousand adherents. \u003cbr/\u003eFounder of the movement, Li Hongzhi lives in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eMeantime, in Beijing, police detained at least six people in Tiananmen Square on Friday although it wasn't immediately clear whether those detained were Falun Gong members, but the square has been the site of repeated protests by the group, especially on key anniversaries.\u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong says at least 250 followers have died from police brutality in China since July 1999, more than half of them in the past six months. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hong Kong-based Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy says it has confirmed 153 deaths in the crackdown.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the rally across from the White House, the demonstrators marched in silence to the Chinese Embassy.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
