Wide of people in street in Kings Cross
Australia has long been known as a nation of beer-lovers.
But now the government, fed up with what it sees as a growing crisis of out-of-control drinking and subsequent violence, has decided it's time for a change.
In the past six months, a barrage of measures have been rolled out to curb excessive drinking.
Relaxing in a bar drinking with friends.
It's a practice shared in countries across the globe, but now the government in Australia say too many revellers are drinking to excess.
The problem is particularly acute in Sydney according to Dr Paul Haber.
A professor of addiction medicine at the University of Sydney, Dr Haber says up to three quarters of police work in some areas is related to alcohol-fuelled violence and disturbances.
He adds that a quarter of accident and emergency admissions are down to the harmful effects of excessive drinking.
Its a situation that needs to be slowed by government policy, according to Dr Haber.
The Australian government agree - the've been rolling out a series of measures to reduce excessive drinking.
In March this year, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced a 53.5 million Australian dollar (approx 34 million US Dollars) campaign against bingeing, complete with an advertising blitz and grants to community groups.
In April, his government increased the tax on premixed alcoholic drinks - or alcopops - which are popular among young people as they often taste like soft drinks.
A series of protest groups popped up on Facebook, including "Aussies Against the Alcohol Tax Increase," which has attracted more than 68,000 members.
In May, the southern state of Victoria joined the battle with a 3-month ban on people entering Melbourne pubs after 2 a.m., prompting a protest that drew thousands.
Officials let the ban expire after three months and are now looking at other solutions, such as placing more officers on the streets.
Attacks with broken glass jumped 7.1 percent between 2003 and 2007 in New South Wales, and alcohol-related, non-domestic assaults surged 7.8 percent between 2004 and 2007, according to the state's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
Last month (October) New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees heralded in what he called a "new era" by imposing strict conditions on 50 of the state's most notorious pubs, including shorter business hours and the mandatory use of plastic cups rather than glass after midnight.
The tax on premixed drinks appears to have at least temporarily cut sales according to Paul Dillon from Australia's Drug and Alcohol Research Training who says that parents are not buying as much of the alco pop drinks for their children as before the price hike.
Walter Tuarae is the owner of Melt, a bar in Sydney's Kings Cross nightclub district.
No one here is throwing up or throwing punches.
Tuarae is frustrated by what he sees as a misplaced, overblown response to an age-old issue.
"I mean hell, we like to go out and party on the weekends you know. People do what they do, that's what you do in this country," he says.
Tuarae says he learned how to handle alcohol young; he had his first beer at a family barbecue when he was 12.
If the government wants people to cut back on drinking he believes it should focus less on regulations and taxes and more on getting families to teach their children limits.
It's an opinion partly shared by one drinker who says government action alone will not sober up Saturday nights in Sydney.
"I don't know if the government should take action alone, or whether that plus parents and society in general needs to be responsible for its own actions."
"About ninety percent of the people that I know drink," says another Kings Cross drinker, "They either drink socially on a very quiet level, or they write themselves off (get very drunk), so it's a pretty big culture."
"I do think there is an acceptance in culture that drinking is ok, and that to be able to have a good time, you do need to go out and have a drink," says another.
Others say the government's war on alcohol abuse is ineffective or unnecessary - a cheap political ploy based on a grossly exaggerated stereotype of Australians.
But if it's a stereotype, the staff at St. Vincent's Hospital in the heart of Sydney's nightlife district have to deal with hundreds every weekend.
Efforts to protect staff from alcohol fuelled violence include bullet proof doors.
Emergency room director, Dr. Gordian Fulde says that binge drinking will create health and social problems in future.
Australians actually aren't the world's biggest drinkers - Ugandans are.
The World Health Organisation ranks Australia a distant 34th in per capita alcohol consumption.
Aussies drink less than the British, but
