But by working with these groups by empowering them, by teaching them, we can make a difference.\"\u003cbr/\u003e27.Mid shot of Baker giving a lecture at the workshop.\u003cbr/\u003e28.Mid shot of sex workers leaving the workshop as it finishes.\u003cbr/\u003e29.Wide shot of Karachi streets, where sex worker is hooked up at night.\u003cbr/\u003e30.Wide shot of sex worker negotiating to a potential client in a car.\u003cbr/\u003e31.Mid shot of sex worker talking with a client on a motorbike.\u003cbr/\u003eHIV and AIDs remain taboo subjects in most of Pakistan - and while the number of cases remains relatively small, the figures are on the rise.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a campaign's underway to educate sex workers about the dangers they face and how to protect themselves. \u003cbr/\u003eNoreen and Asma preparing for a night's work.\u003cbr/\u003e28 year old Noreen went into the sex business five years ago when her husband died and there was no way she could look after her three children. \u003cbr/\u003ePoverty compelled Noreen to come to Karachi from central Pakistan to work as a dancer in the sex business.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"there are enormous miseries at home, which compelled us to work as a sex workers.\" \u003cbr/\u003eShe was not aware of the risk of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS, but now a non-government organisation called the Gender and Reproductive Health Forum is trying to change all that.\u003cbr/\u003eNoreen is among more than 100,000 sex workers in Karachi, and she's among those the Forum is trying to convince to practice safe sex by using condoms and other contraceptive measures.\u003cbr/\u003eOne third of Pakistan's population lives below the poverty line, and the low literacy rates mean many don't know about HIV and AIDs.\u003cbr/\u003eReaching the sex workers is quite difficult for organisations working to prevent AIDS and HIV because the sex business is largely underground in this Islamic republic, where having illegal sex is a criminal offence and punishable by stoning to death.\u003cbr/\u003eUnderstandably the sex workers are afraid of this law - making it even more difficult for health workers to reach them and pass on their message of safe sex.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd it's among these people and drug users that then incidents of HIV/AIDs are rising. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Sadar Kamal Pasha says \"If protective measures are not taken, say a condom is not used, that's unprotected sex. And if one of the sexual partners is infected with, or is a carrier of the HIV virus, then there is a 50 percent chance that he could transmit the virus to his or her sexual partner.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut a recent workshop arranged by the Gender and Reproductive Health Forum was considered a success when it was well attended by a large number of sex workers. \u003cbr/\u003eSome 70 female sex workers, mainly from the red light area of Bulbul Hazr Dastan, turned up for the three-day workshop to attend lectures and interactive sessions.\u003cbr/\u003eParticipants were told that since the 1980s a large proportion of HIV cases had been detected in men, particularly those who had worked abroad. \u003cbr/\u003eThe organisers agreed to help Pakistan develop models of good practice in providing culturally appropriate sexual health promotion strategies.\u003cbr/\u003eDaniel Baker, a representative of UNFPA in Pakistan says  \"What UNFPA does, we supply financial resources but more importantly we have technical expertise and we have visiting experts who worked in many countries in Asia, whether sex workers man sexes with man, injecting drug user all adverse population for getting HIV and there have been a lot of measures developed as to how to address this issue \". \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to UNAIDS an estimated 96,000 people are living with HIV or AIDs in Pakistan. \u003cbr/\u003eBut whether the safe sex message gets across to these sex workers has yet to be
