of collapse.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are concerns that Friday's killing of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and recent sniper attacks on Sri Lankan government soldiers could push the island nation back into war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government on Thursday asked the Parliament to extend an emergency rule decree in the country that was imposed after Kadirgamar was killed by suspected Tamil Tiger snipers on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eTiger leaders have denied government accusations that they were behind the killing of Kadirgamar, an ethnic Tamil who was one of the strongest critics of the guerrillas' rebellion. \u003cbr/\u003eTwenty years of civil war on the tropical island nation of 19 (m) million have left more than 65-thousand dead.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the vast majority of Sri Lankans, whose lives have been savaged by  two decades of violence, Kadirgamar's assassination has brought back fears that the country may be headed for yet another armed conflict with the rebels. \u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts agree the recent surge in violence could further endanger an already fragile cease-fire pact signed by the government and Tigers in 2002.\u003cbr/\u003ePeace talks have now been stalled for over a year even though both sides are honouring the cease-fire for now.\u003cbr/\u003eDiscrimination against the Tamils led the Tigers to take up arms in 1983 before a cease-fire was brokered in 2002.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the foreign minister's killing, the Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga has vowed to continue with the peace process.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts say it is unlikely that Sri Lanka will go back to full-scale war but continued violence may keep the island in turmoil.\u003cbr/\u003eKumaratunga may also face political trouble with the opposition parties
