Pan from books to Roux sitting at his desk (++REPEATED SHOT 6++)\u003cbr/\u003eA French neurosurgeon who says he secretly treated Kim Jong Il confirmed on Monday that the reclusive North Korean leader had a debilitating stroke in 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Francois-Xavier Roux said he was flown urgently to North Korea in August 2008 to examine Kim, who was unconscious and \"in a critical state\" while in intensive care at Pyongyang's Red Cross Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eCiting doctor-patient privilege and state secrecy, Roux declined to say how he had examined Kim, or indicate what treatment he had recommended.       \u003cbr/\u003e\"My job was to try and save him from this critical state by talking with the other doctors, by giving medical advice, etc. He was in a\u003cbr/\u003elife-threatening situation,\" Roux told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korean officials first contacted Roux by phone in 1993 after Kim had a small head injury, following a horse-riding accident, the doctor said, adding that he never understood why they had sought him out.\u003cbr/\u003eThe stroke three years ago prompted North Korea to contact Roux again, and this time North Korean authorities arranged for the doctor to come to Pyongyang, the country's capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trip and medical exam gave nearly unparalleled access for a Westerner into North Korea's secretive regime. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the stroke, Kim's chances of dying grew with time, Roux said.\u003cbr/\u003eOf his interaction with the late North Korean leader Roux said it was surprisingly normal.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You would imagine that the head of a dictatorship has a very specific and visible psychological profile.
