Fed up with your cartoonish avatar?  \u003cbr/\u003eWalk in virtual reality has arrived. \u003cbr/\u003eA team of researchers in Grenoble, France, has devised a ground-breaking system which can clone a subject in 3D in real time.  \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough this might look like a computer generated image, this is the very real very modern headquarters of INRIA in Grenoble, France (Institut National de Recherche Informatique et en Automatique).\u003cbr/\u003eBut inside the building nothing is quite what it seems.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt INRIA, stepping into a video game is easy as walking through a door, thanks to a new system, called \"Grimage\"  - a combination of the words \"grid\" and \"image\". \u003cbr/\u003eDavid Knossow, one of the engineers at  INRIA explains how the system captures images of the user and simulates the captured images with virtual objects and displays them in a 3D environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe INRIA team use up to 14 video cameras to capture the user from different angles.  \u003cbr/\u003eSpecialised software then identifies and extracts their shadows combining them to form a rough 3D model. \u003cbr/\u003eThe software quickly adds colour and texture to the model, resulting in a fleshed-out avatar that mimics the subject's movements in real time.\u003cbr/\u003eResearcher, Bruno Raffin explains that the technology can be used for video conferences by multiplying a platform in different locations.  \u003cbr/\u003eEach person participating in the conference would be cloned in 3D on the screen so that people in different countries or towns could attend meetings in a virtual reality room. \u003cbr/\u003eMost existing methods of recording require a person to have high visibility markers, so that cameras can capture and save image data before converting it into a  2D image. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Bruno Raffin explains that with this new technology no markers are needed, allowing for example, a surgeon to practice on a virtual body using real instruments. \u003cbr/\u003eA version of \"Grimage\" was unveiled at last summer's  Siggraph (Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques) conference in San Diego, California. \u003cbr/\u003eA full body version of Grimage has been tested and used to film street performers, allowing researchers to manipulate their images on screen. \u003cbr/\u003eChoreographer, Florian Geoffrey believes the technology opens the way to endless opportunities. \u003cbr/\u003eGeoffrey explains that the technology is capable of replicating a highly realistic 3D image of an actor in order to create a crowd of people in a scene.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe adds while current CGI technology requires extensive modelling and animation, the photo-realistic 3D image produced by Grimage acts more like an instant camera. \u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers at INRIA say that in the future, filmakers using Grimage will have no limit to the visual reality that they will be able to create in an instant - from elaborate, costume heavy scenes in a movie to incredible stunt scenes.   \u003cbr/\u003eAnd for fans of virtual reality, one day you may be able to immerse yourself fully in your favourite
