Sign hanging in hallway reading: (English and Japanese) \"One for All, All for One\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe kitchen at an evacuation shelter in the Japanese town of Karakuwa is stocked with items many Japanese made homeless by the tsunami can only dream about: crunchy red apples, bright green onions, sizzling pans of fat, pink shrimp.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside the bathroom, buckets of water brought in by helpful students allow those taking refuge here the dignity of flushing the toilet - a rare treat in this wave-battered wasteland.\u003cbr/\u003eKarakuwa was spared none of the tsunami's wrath when it roared across a vast stretch of Japan's northeast coast last week. Many homes here have been reduced to rubble, and mountains of garbage and splintered wood litter the landscape. There is no water, no power, no mobile phone reception.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while other towns wait desperately for the government to deliver badly-needed food and supplies, the people of Karakuwa opted instead to take care of each other. \u003cbr/\u003eTeachers at the junior high school immediately turned their building into a shelter. Residents and business owners whose buildings survived the giant wave delivered food, clothing and bedding to the school, where teachers and the newly- homeless work side by side to prepare three meals and two snacks a day for all in need.\u003cbr/\u003eThe teachers divided themselves into four teams of six, with each group running the shelter for two straight days.\u003cbr/\u003eFor those who have lost everything, the community spirit has been their saviour.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have a very strong bond in this area,\" said Toru Nakajima, 52, the school's head teacher. \"That's why the residents don't want to see anyone from this community suffering.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"One for All, All for One,\" reads a pink sign that hangs in a hallway. Around the corner, plastic buckets the students fill each day with water from the school swimming pool sit outside the bathroom, allowing the 30-or-so people sheltering here the ability to flush the toilets.\u003cbr/\u003eIn many shelters along the coast, people are surviving on one to two rice balls per day. Here, they have regular and balanced meals of meat, vegetables and fruit. There is not enough water to bathe, but plenty to drink. A generator allows the school to turn on the lights at night, and locals whose houses are still standing - but are without power - come down when it is dark to enjoy the glow.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a second-floor classroom, children sit on a mattress playing cards and giggling. Next to them, 43-year-old Emi Yoshida reads a book, still wearing the same clothes she had on the day the tsunami struck. She has not showered in a week, she longs for a bed, and the frame is all that remains of her house. Still, she is grateful for the comfort the community has provided her and her two sons.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This place is very comfortable compared to the one I was in before,\" Yoshida said. \"The camp we were in before provided only two meals a day, but this one we can get three meals and two snacks. There are many kids and the teachers are very kind, so that's a great help.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the school kitchen downstairs, the floors and tables are covered in luxuries that would make the mouths of evacuees in other shelters water: fresh fruit and vegetables, protein-rich boiled eggs, bottles of fragrant sauces.\u003cbr/\u003eVolunteers bustle around gas-powered burners, dumping squid donated by the local fish shop into hot frying pans. Nearby, a giant rice cooker given to the school by a resident sits on a table, steam rising from the heaping mounds of rice inside. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the food began arriving the morning after the tsunami roared through - donated by locals. Other items were already on-hand in the school kitchen. Together, teachers, evacuees and mothers of students from the school whip up meals that have kept everyone inside well-nourished for days.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I came here because I wanted to help,\" said Shizu Yamamot, 39, whose son attends the school. \"I think eating is the most important thing to live, and when people eat our meals, they say it's very delicious. ... I feel like I belong here now.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe women mix together the squid, shrimp and stir-fried vegetables in large pots, turning it into a nourishing stew that they ladle onto bowls of rice. They load the bowls onto trays, along with slices of cut-up apples, and deliver them to the hungry waiting in rooms throughout the building.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the middle of a classroom, a group of boys plunk themselves in seats around a table, the bowls of stew sending plumes of steam into the air, which hovers around the freezing mark. In unison, they bow their heads.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Thank you,\" they say. \"For everything.\" Then, their chilled hands armed with chopsticks, they gobble their dinner
