Wide of Hart speaking to journalist\u003cbr/\u003eAs political and business leaders gathered in Cape Town on Thursday for a World Economic Forum (WEF) that aims to deliver on Africa's promises, unemployment in South Africa has reached a record high. \u003cbr/\u003eThe three-day meeting of the WEF attracts heads of state from across the African continent, brought together to rub shoulders with Africa's business elite. \u003cbr/\u003eBut not everyone is feeling optimistic. \u003cbr/\u003eNew statistics were released in South Africa highlighting the country's soaring level of unemployment.\u003cbr/\u003ePhillip Jennings, from the UNI (Union Network International) Global Union, told the Associated Press on Thursday why those figures are so concerning. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In South Africa, the unemployment statistics were published yesterday which show the official rate has now gone over 25 percent, but the statistic from the street is that almost 40 percent of those who are able to work cannot work in South Africa,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a social catastrophe and it should become priority number one, not just for the South African government but for governments everywhere,\" Jennings added.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said Africa must urgently address the matter. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Africa has a new chance: Mother Nature has endowed you with the materials and the commodities that the world wants. It is here in abundance,\" Jennings said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You have this windfall and the message that the trade union movement brings here is don't lose this opportunity and that it is important that this windfall, that this legacy, is used to diversify the economy, to invest in infrastructure, to invest in education and skills, to give this growing, young generation a chance.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, on the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa's commercial capital, few of those searching for work were finding many opportunities. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of thousands are desperately looking for employment, with many turning to the roadside in their search for work - no matter how piecemeal. \u003cbr/\u003eMany fail even to find the most menial of jobs. \u003cbr/\u003eEconomic analyst Chris Hart said government policies were at the heart of the problem. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said states need to address the over-zealous regulatory environments they've created which restrict the development of small-scale business and sustainable growth. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Unemployment is a structural problem in South Africa.
