Various of Dia talking to journalist \u003cbr/\u003eWhen he was growing up in the drab Paris suburb of Sarcelle, where violence and arson attacks have taken place over the last two weeks, French designer Mohamed Dia was guaranteed anything but a glittering future. \u003cbr/\u003eThe son of Malian immigrants, Dia spent most of his childhood in government care after his parents divorced. \u003cbr/\u003eBy the time he was 15, he was doing jail time for car robbery. \u003cbr/\u003eBut street crime has turned to street wear, at 32 he now runs a multi- million dollar business, posting a turnover of 17.5 (m) million US dollars last year. \u003cbr/\u003eDia knew he could just as easily have turned out like the hundreds of youths who have burned cars and ransacked public buildings for two weeks in France to protest their daily lot of discrimination and bleak prospects. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I understand the kid in the street who is fighting back against a system that means nothing ever changes,\" Dia told The Associated Press in an interview at his company headquarters in the northeastern Paris suburb of Bobigny. \u003cbr/\u003eDia said had few role models, growing up in high-rise tower blocks built for immigrants from France's colonies in north Africa,.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever a visit to the United States, aged 19, changed all that. \u003cbr/\u003eIn France, few members of ethnic minorities have made it to positions of high responsibility in politics and the media. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Dia, it was music that gave him his big break. \u003cbr/\u003eDia started making clothes for his friends who were part of France's vibrant rap scene in the 1990s, and quickly created a buzz among inner city youth, happy to wear a home-grown label they could identify with. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly three years after he launched his M.Dia label in 1998, the designer made his American dream come true by signing a license deal with the US National Basketball Association (NBA) which gives him the right to use its logo for clothes sold in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eShortly afterwards, he launched another line with former Fugees musician Wyclef Jean in a bid to crack the US market. \u003cbr/\u003eM.Dia is now sold in 500 stores in France and 250 in the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eDia, who spends six months a year stateside, is angry about the stereotypes of violence which have plague the French suburbs, stereotypes likely to be reinforced by the dramatic images of burning cars plastered across world media in recent days. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said he remains pessimistic about the future, claiming it would take a US-style equal opportunities policy to erase decades of discrimination, a concept which has met strong resistance from France's political elite. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Kids today are sick of empty promises. They don't want to be handed money and told to shut up.
