Some directors like to create their own materials. Some like to use real events, and some like to adapt books. I am one of those. I just learned that I am a better director when I do that. When I am collaborating on somebody else's work, whether they're a live writer or a dead writer. It pushes me to rise to their level. Usually if I'm adapting something it's a book that I love. I want to be, at least try, to be as good as that book. And even if I don't reach the heights of William Faulkner, the striving makes me a better director.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the second time, Franco has adapted a Faulkner novel. He covered \"As I Lay Dying\" in 2013. He attributes that one with inspiring his own novel that was adapted for the big screen, \"Palo Alto.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"In fact, my book, 'Palo Alto,' which is a collection of short stories, each one told from the first person perspective of a different character was very inspired by Faulkner, in particular, 'As I Lay Dying,' where each chapter in that book is told by a different character. So even if I don't use some of the dense coruscating language of Faulkner, I am using some structural things that he uses. And then when we went to make the movie adaptation of 'Palo Alto,' because I had been adapting someone else's book in the movies, so I thought why don't I let somebody else adapt my book into a movie because I've come to really appreciate the way that kind of collaborator takes my material into a new place,\" Franco said.\u003cbr/\u003eFranco recently covered Cormac McCarthy's \"Child of God,\" satrring himself and Scott Haze.\u003cbr/\u003eHaze, who also stars in \"The Sound and the Fury,\" likes the idea of working from great source material.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You have more stuff to start with, first of all. These novels are written by great authors, Cormac McCarthy, William Faulkner, umm (Charles) Bukowski. So you have more stuff to draw upon. There's not just the script,\" Haze said.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile in Toronto, Franco did not take his hat off. He cited his experience a few days earlier at the film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The problem is that in Venice the shaved head took over, so nobody talked about 'The Sound and the Fury.' They were talking about the shaved head.
