Plane taking off\u003cbr/\u003eIn the wake of recent airport security breaches, Israel''s strict air travel security is being looked at as a model for other states in tightening checks on travellers.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Israel, strict security verifications have largely always been the norm and Tel Aviv''s Ben Gurion International Airport is considered one of the world''s safest.\u003cbr/\u003eAirports around the world are now reviewing screening programmes and security checks following a Nigerian man''s reported attempt to blow up a US airliner flying from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington is seeking enhanced security measures on all trans-Atlantic flights heading for the United States and European nations were sharply divided over the need to install full-body scanners at European airports.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US and some other states are now turning to Israel as a model of airport security. \u003cbr/\u003eThe US Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Jane Holl Lute, is visiting Israel to meet security officials there in a bid to increase screening measures and prevent future attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael''s notoriously high security standards have prompted scores of companies to create devices and machines that could help thwart a large scale attack on an airliner.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of those companies is Suspect Detection Systems (SDS), which has created a security check that assesses a traveller''s voice and scans the person''s palm to discern, what it claims, is the traveller''s intent.\u003cbr/\u003eSDS says stress levels in the voice and palm are measured as the passenger is asked a series of questions. \u003cbr/\u003eIf the levels are too high, he is labelled a suspect.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our system can identify intent. Actually our system can prevent a crime before it happens because it can identify a plan or intent of a person to do something bad,\" said Shabtai Shoval, chief executive of the company.\u003cbr/\u003eThe SDS machine is in use in several countries, Shoval said, including Israel, the US, Mexico and India.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother company has also focused on detecting passengers'' intent by measuring emotion.\u003cbr/\u003eSimilar to the SDS device, the one created by Nemesysco measures emotion while a passenger is asked a series of questions by the machine. \u003cbr/\u003eThe voice is analysed and if it raises a red flag, the passenger will undergo another round of questioning by a security guard.\u003cbr/\u003eNemesysco chief executive Amir Liberman said a person who is planning an attack is usually in an extreme state of stress and that is what the machine is meant to pick up on. \u003cbr/\u003eA normal traveller, even one who is afraid of flying, would not give off such high levels of anxiety.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is not a lie detector. It is something that is intended to make sure that your emotional state is what we expect to see in this environment. If this is not the case then you will be forwarded to further investigation,\" Liberman said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the machine is used in several airports in Europe, and has thwarted drug smuggling in recent tests.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother Israeli-made technology gives control room operators a bird''s eye, three-dimensional view over airports, using cameras and sensors, allowing them to keep tabs on what''s occurring in every corner of every terminal. \u003cbr/\u003eIf a passenger appears suspicious, they can be followed until embarking onto the plane to ensure they are not planning an attack.\u003cbr/\u003eBeyond that, the system collects and analyses information and can immediately suggest to an operator what is the best approach for dealing with a particular situation, be it a fire, a bomb or a shooting attack.\u003cbr/\u003eAll three of these companies were founded by former intelligence agents, security guards and even ex-combat pilots. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael''s constant attention to security in daily life is purpotedly what gives it the edge in security, both in innovation and practice.\u003cbr/\u003eThe executive director of the International Institute for Counterterrorism, Boaz Ganor, said Israel has become the interest of the international community as it is \"trying to learn once more what are those new innovations, new technologies, new procedures that Israel is using in order to protect its air travel.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePassengers flying through Tel Aviv are used to extensive, and often unpleasant, interrogations by Israeli security guards as they depart.\u003cbr/\u003eIf Israeli-type checks are adopted elsewhere in light of recent threats, passengers worldwide can expect more intrusive security questioning - and ultimately longer lines -
