Bush and Vice President Al Gore were each projected to win at various times during a nail-biting election night.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington newspapers got caught in the early morning deadline crunch in a presidential race that is too close to call.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Washington Post stopped the presses four times during the night as the predicted winner of the crucial Florida vote wavered between Bush and Gore. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first headline indicated that the race was too close to call while the second front page declared Bush victorious.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe third edition featured the wait for the Florida count.\u003cbr/\u003eThe final headline said the election was going down to the wire and the Florida recount was necessary.\u003cbr/\u003eOther papers were faced with the same dilemma.\u003cbr/\u003eAll over Florida, where the governor is George W Bush's brother, Jeb Bush election officials spent Wednesday morning getting down to recounting the initial vote tallies, involving all of the nearly six (m) million votes in the tight race for president.\u003cbr/\u003eThe recount comes after the margin between Bush and Gore kept on shrinking through Election Night. \u003cbr/\u003eAt last count, Bush was leading Gore by one thousand-655 votes in the unofficial Associated Press count - with all precincts reporting, but an unknown number of absentee ballots still to be counted.\u003cbr/\u003eOne factor in Bush's favour in the Florida election was the dissatisfaction by the Cuban community with the Clinton Administration over the handling of the Elian Gonzalez affair.\u003cbr/\u003eSigns calling for Cuban-Americans to vote Republican were hung at the Little Havana home of the Cuban boy.\u003cbr/\u003eElian survived a boat sinking that killed his mother as they were trying to flee Cuba; he was later returned by the Federal government to his father in Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Austin, Texas the crowds have left the scene of what was at one point a victory party for Governor George W.
