Mid of Bosnian doctors treating injured man at Sarajevo hospital\u003cbr/\u003eIraqi doctors are experienced in treating war injuries and there are not many colleagues in the world who can still show them something they have not seen. \u003cbr/\u003eNot even Bosnian doctors who gained similar experience during the 1992-95 war. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Bosnian medics are able to help their Iraqi colleagues by giving them advice on rehabilitation programmes for patients. \u003cbr/\u003eThe University Clinical Centre in Tuzla in Bosnia is hosting a series of six training sessions for 110 Iraqi physical therapists, rehabilitation centre managers and hospital-based physicians who provide care to the civilians wounded in the war in Iraq. \u003cbr/\u003eThe institution was chosen by the Centre for International Rehabilitation based in Chicago and the Iraqi Ministry of Health in Baghdad and is funded by the World Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eBosnia's rehabilitation centres provide an idea of the future for Iraq's physical therapists including amputees coping with their prosthetic limbs, wheelchair bound patients. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile some patients may completely recover from serious injuries, some also develop complications following war-time surgeries. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Physical rehabilitation is more developed in Bosnia than in other countries because of the war they had here. We are mostly interested in spinal cord injuries, head injuries and amputations,\" said the head of the 21-member Iraqi team, Ali Davood Al Khafaji, from Baghdad Central Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Here they had a similar situation to the one we now have in Iraq and they have great experience and are willing to share their knowledge with us,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eEmir Halilbegovic, the Chief Orthopaedist at the Tuzla clinic said staff at the clinic have enormous experience of working with war injuries and they want to help by passing on what they know. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Our colleagues come from a war zone and it is important for them that as well as the knowledge they gained from medical books, they also get some advise that comes from experience,\" he said.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors can learn from each other about many areas including medication, recovery times and types of prosthetic limbs. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the 1992-95 Bosnian war, the staff of the Tuzla hospital treated thousands of injuries that doctors under normal circumstances rarely get to see in their careers. \u003cbr/\u003eIn war times, doctors see hundreds of bomb explosion victims, and bullet or multiple shrapnel injuries and often medics have to learn as they go along. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors have to treat patients under very difficult and often poor medical conditions. \u003cbr/\u003ePatients sometimes do not receive proper treatment because out of the sometimes hundreds of similar patients admitted at the same time, doctors choose the most difficult ones to treat first. \u003cbr/\u003eIn those moments, the focus is on saving as many lives as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eMedics in Tuzla have learned that the importance of applying proper post-surgical treatment immediately to improve survivors' quality of life in the long term. \u003cbr/\u003eBosnian doctors have an over decade-long experience in physical therapy, rehabilitation and post-surgical treatment of war injuries they now can share with their Iraqi colleagues. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Shrapnel, bullets ... the injuries they had here are similar to those we have in Iraq.
