Armstrong, Edward E. Aldrin and Michael Collins made a longstanding human dream come true.\u003cbr/\u003eArmstrong was the first one to step on the moon's alien surface, followed by Buzz Aldrin 18 minutes later.\u003cbr/\u003eThe moon landing marked America's victory in the Cold War space race.\u003cbr/\u003eThe race began in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik One.\u003cbr/\u003eIt prompted President John F. Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they did.\u003cbr/\u003eArmstrong, Aldrin and Michael Collins were chosen to make the journey in to space.\u003cbr/\u003eA dangerous trip that would catapult them into history, but could also cost them their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eSitting atop Saturn Five - the biggest launch vehicle ever made -  the astronauts roared into space.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a four day, quarter-million mile journey, Collins circled the moon in the mother ship.\u003cbr/\u003eAldrin and Armstrong sped toward the moon's surface in a lunar lander nicknamed \"Eagle\".\u003cbr/\u003eOnce on the moon, Armstrong and Aldrin loped across the pocked surface, enjoying the lightness of their one-sixth gravity.\u003cbr/\u003eAll this was watched by millions of people on their black and white TV screens.\u003cbr/\u003eDough Millard, senior curator of Space Technology at the Science Museum explains that it \"had been building throughout the 1960s so people were expecting it. But even so it was an absolutely stupendous achievement and people couldn't really believe it was happening.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut what else happened in that significant year?\u003cbr/\u003eRichard Nixon became the 37th President of the United States, following Lyndon B. Johnson.\u003cbr/\u003eHis presidency met head on the Vietnam war and a number of huge peace protests.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the same time the hippie movement was in full bloom.\u003cbr/\u003eNudity appeared in movies, shocking those of an older, more conservative generation.\u003cbr/\u003eDrugs, like marijuana became more common.\u003cbr/\u003e1969 was also the year of the infamous Woodstock festival, a \"monumentally disorganised weekend.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFashion became psychedelic.\u003cbr/\u003eDough Millard explains that \"1969 was a pivotal year in many respects. If we're looking at the pop movement, the summer of love 1967 that kind of started to crumble away in 68, things were getting pretty serious in 69, there were deaths at some rock festivals, there was the Vietnam war going from bad to worse, there were riots on some of the streets in the United States, so there were some pretty grim things going on while we were achieving this monumental project of landing human beings on the moon.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAll this happened while three men were on the moon, watching the earth from afar.\u003cbr/\u003eMillard says \"the strange thing is that even when humans were landing and walking on the moon they were thinking about earth.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time Apollo 11 lifted off in 1969, the U-S had spent 24 billion dollars on space and lost three astronauts in training.\u003cbr/\u003eThe original capsule of Apollo 10, from the previous mission, is displayed at London's Science Museum.\u003cbr/\u003eIt looks like a film prop, or an artefact from a past time.\u003cbr/\u003eMillard explains how basic its technology really was: \"the computing power that that had to take astronauts to the moon and back is less than you'd have probably in a chip in your washing machine, it's very small indeed. But of course back then it did the job and it was at the cutting edge of technology, so we shouldn't denigrate what was being achieved back then.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors to London's Science Museum remember the moment they witnessed the moon landing. \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Sealey says it \"was amazing to me to see them looking back at the earth, the earth looked so small from the moon and it's exciting to see what the earth looks like from out of space.\"\u003cbr/\u003eScott Kelly was too young at the time to actually remember watching the significant event, but he has \"seen it since then.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMuriel Williams thinks it is still \"quite astounding actually and almost unbelievable.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo will there be a man on Mars anytime soon?\u003cbr/\u003eDough Millard doesn't think so.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he would \"be very surprised, if I lived that long, if it were to happen this century.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the meantime, man is still exploring the moon. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly a month ago, on the 18th June 2009, NASA sent an unmanned rocket to the moon to determine where astronauts could land and set up camp in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA hopes to return humans to the moon by 2020.\u003cbr/\u003ekeyword space\u003cbr/\u003eFILE: July 20, 1969 - Moon's surface - NASA\u003cbr/\u003e1.
