Close up of falcon sitting on man's gloved hand
Hunting with birds is ten thousand years old and is a particularly deep rooted tradition in Arab countries.
But some of the most ground breaking work to breed and train birds of prey takes place, far from the desert in rural Britain.
You can sense the excitement of the hunt when the prey is in sight.
In the middle of the desert a keenly trained falcon is released into the sky and what follows is a chase which thrills the bird's audience.
But did you know that many of these awesome birds have actually been bred and trained in these lush, green hills in Wales.
It's part of a breeding programme to replace diminishing numbers of birds in the wild.
The eggs are taken from nesting pairs of falcons and placed here in the temperature-controlled incubator room.
The methods are scientific and every attention is paid to getting the details right.
Approximately 300 eggs are artificially hatched here in the early spring at Wildlife Consultants International and it's deliberated timed to coincide with when the birds hatch in the wild.
According to aviculturalist Barbara Fox the good results match the improvement in rearing techniques.
She says "the incubators have improved tremendously, knowledge of how to feed the birds and what kind of vitamins and supplements they might need. The knowledge has developed tremendously so if you improve things then the result will be better."
One hatched the young birds are given intensive care, fed with the latest feeding tools and kept in heated containers.
Fox says historically in the Middle East wild birds were only captured and kept for a season and then released.
Now these captive bred birds are available.
The expertise learned here over the last 25 years, ensures that the maximum number of birds survive to adulthood and that means birds don't have to be taken from the wild.
Research biologist Andrew Dixon says commercial breeding can certainly benefit conservation efforts, especially where bird populations are extinct.
Food is used for positive reinforcement when training birds.
Raptors (birds of prey) are not affectionate animals and they don't develop emotional ties.
But they soon learn that life with the falconer affords them the easiest and most reliable source of food and protection.
Nick Fox director of Wildlife Consultants International states the four basic requirements for the hunting tradition to be able to continue in any country.
He says they're a "good hunting area, quarry (prey) in the hunting area, birds of prey to hunt and falconers with their heritage able to train them all."
These trainers use crows feathers to encourage these young birds to hunt and the centre has established a reputation for providing good quality birds for hunting in the UK.
Fox says that in some places the number of small mammals may have decreased but that is unlikely to be due to hunting with raptors.
He says "in places quarry has gone down in numbers not from over hunting by falconers but from environmental reasons. Birds of prey, remember, were decimated by pesticides and in the 1800s in Britain they were killed by game keepers."
As training progresses the birds are given more opportunities to hunt on their own.
Fox says an application is being made to UNESCO to recognise falconry as part of our heritage.
Back out in the desert the intense concentration continues, as does the chase.
These falconers may not be aware of how significant the Welsh breeding programme is to their tradition.
keyword animals birds
