Close of leprechaun themed photo displays\u003cbr/\u003eOn St Patrick's day the world celebrates Irish culture and traditions - and the leprechaun is centre stage. \u003cbr/\u003eThis mythical, mischievous elf is often portrayed as having a passion for trouble making, but now a Dublin museum is helping to rebuild the leprechaun's reputation. \u003cbr/\u003eSt. Patrick's Day (March 17)  is a focal point for Irish celebrations worldwide. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom Budapest to New York - and of course Dublin - people dress up in leprechaun costumes and take to the streets. \u003cbr/\u003eIrish people have told stories about the Leprechaun for more than a thousand years. \u003cbr/\u003eNumerous tall tales about the small mischief-maker have not only echoed across the Emerald isle but have travelled throughout the world.\u003cbr/\u003eSet in the heart of the Irish capital, the National Leprechaun Museum helps visitors to discover what really lies behind the well-known stories of the pint-sized gold digger; of rainbows, pots of gold and the supernatural.\u003cbr/\u003eHaving first opened its doors in 2010, the Dublin site takes visitors not only on a journey through the life and times of one of Ireland's most iconic figures but also deep into Irish and Celtic culture.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile there are various accounts of the history of the Leprechaun in Ireland, the first sightings of the illusive character stretch back to the 8th century.\u003cbr/\u003eThe name may well of derived from the Gaelic Irish words 'leath bhrogan', meaning shoemaker. \u003cbr/\u003eBy trade the leprechaun is said to be a cobbler and he provides the fairies and various otherworldly creatures with their shoes.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are thought to be about 2 foot 6 inches (75cm's) tall, a member of the 'little people', as fairies are often called here. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen Irish people went abroad they took stories of the leprechaun with them and these spread around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eHollywood went on to make scores of cartoons about the illusive gold digger and he has even made cameo appearances in the Simpsons.\u003cbr/\u003eToday he is known as everything from a consummate drunkard to the bite size inspiration behind cereal brands.\u003cbr/\u003eA lot of the modern day representation bears scant resemblance to anything found in the cycles of Irish folklore. \u003cbr/\u003eThe National Leprechaun Museum helps visitors bridge this divide.\u003cbr/\u003eFounder and director of the museum, Tom O'Rahilly says the level of interest in leprechauns has meant the facility has gone from strength to strength since opening in 2010. \u003cbr/\u003e\" People are really interested in leprechauns and globally people are really interested in leprechauns. It is said if a human catches him he is obliged to tell you where and hand over the loot, according to the museum. \u003cbr/\u003eLeprechauns exist in a world of the imagination and the unknown. \u003cbr/\u003eTo many people this world existed right outside their door. \u003cbr/\u003eIn past times as the evenings grew dark, the land outside and the fireside stories came alive with tales of fairies and the spirit world.\u003cbr/\u003eTom O'Rahilly says this love of storytelling in Ireland has been made an integral part of the fabric of the museum. \u003cbr/\u003e\"What I think Ireland is really famous for is stories and I think people like the fun and engagement in those stories and we are just saying where does that fun and engagement come from, how come Irish people have the 'gift of the gab', and its because they've got these outlandish, amazing stories to tell that allows people flights of fancy and to bring a whole slew of people along with you. visitor numbers dropped by almost 12% in 2009 and the tourism industry has been struggling to reverse a continuing decline of tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent months though the first signs of
