Mid shot of laptop
Home computing is a fast and ever changing industry.
With thousands of new products on the market every year it is difficult to know what to buy and what to wait for in a sector known for its quick development.
But in times of financial strain, people will have to choose wisely if they are to buy hardware that will stand the test of time.
The name "computer" was originally a job title.
It was once used to describe those people, predominantly women, whose job it was to perform the repetitive calculations required to compute such things as navigational tables, tide charts, and planetary positions for astronomical almanacs.
But the repetition involved with this work quickly triggered boredom and that would sometimes lead to carelessness and mistakes.
And so, hundreds of years ago, inventors began searching for a way to create a machine to perform the tasks of these human computers.
The abacus was one of the aids used to assist in these mathematical computations.
Its main value was that it helped humans to remember the figures needed to perform the necessary calculations.
Computers have come a long way from those crude calculating machines - they no longer resemble the great hulking machines invented in the middle of the 20th Century.
London's Science Museum displays a fine specimen of a computer which shows exactly how much technology has developed over the past few decades.
Among the early computers on display is 'Ernie' which built in 1957 and today takes pride of place at the Science Museum.
But the oldest working computer in the world is said to be the 1956 Ferranti Pegasus held at London's Science Museum.
The museum's assistant Curator of Technology, Rob Skitmore, proudly states that the Ferranti Pegasus is still run every two weeks today.
Now, more than half a century after the Ferranti Pegasus was built, computers play ever more frequent and important roles in every day life.
Computer technology is faster and more powerful, and memory and software specifications change on a near weekly basis.
And smaller and smaller portable computers are set to become very popular.
Nick Thomas, a Sales Executive at the London department store, John Lewis, says demand for extra mobility is generating huge interest.
However, it has been suggested that 2009 may be the year of the touch screen.
With products like the iPhone bringing this technology into the mainstream, consumers may well be seeing similar things migrating into home computing soon.
More energy efficient computers will be on the market and families in ever increasing numbers will be bringing central hubs into their homes.
Household servers will be hitting shop shelves in higher and higher numbers and a great many families will be wirelessly sharing files throughout your home in the coming year.
Using wireless technology, allows photos, music and movies to be accessed anywhere in the house.
Kelvyn Taylor from Personal Computer Magazine says with all these developments there's a lot to look forward to in the coming year.
A popular trend for 2009 is likely to be mini laptops, which will make computers even more portable, especially since they are becoming more affordable.
Home networking is set to take the computer world by storm. Household servers will be hitting shop shelves in higher and higher numbers. And a great many families will be wirelessly sharing files throughout the home in the coming year.
For those looking for more and more power for their PC, Pentium are launching their most important product since the Pentium Pro in 1995. Their new Core i7 processors will mean computers won't be as noisy, more importantly will help lower energy bills and laptops running longer between charges.
For those people fed up with all the glitches and problems with Windows Vista there may be light at the end of the tunnel.
A preview release of Windows 7 may be out in 2009 but people wanting to get their
