This year store owner MOHAMMED AL FAYED helped...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eIf it's the first Wednesday of the year in London, then there is only one place to be - Harrods of Knightsbridge - for the official opening of the flagship store's New Year sale. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year store owner MOHAMMED AL FAYED helped not one, but two, young ladies from the open-topped landau - the young Welsh singing sensation, CHARLOTTE CHURCH, and the twenty-five-year-old Italian soprano FILIPPA GIORDANO - before accompanying them inside for the traditional countdown to the opening.\u003cbr/\u003eYoung and gifted, fourteen-year-old Church counts some of the world's most powerful figures among the millions of fans of her extraordinary voice. \u003cbr/\u003eThe singer, born into a humble working class Cardiff household, has performed for the Pope, Bill Clinton, and the British Royal Family, and her incredible success has made her the UK's biggest-selling artist in the US market. \u003cbr/\u003eHer first two albums, 'Voice of an Angel' and 'Charlotte Church' sold by the truckload, and her new seasonal offering, 'DREAM A DREAM', is set to do the same. \u003cbr/\u003eThe much-in-demand Charlotte lit up the world's leading shopping street, Oxford Street, in London last November which was appropriate since her new album features a host of Christmas tunes, from 'Winter Wonderland' to 'Ding Dong Merrily on High'. The title track, 'Dream A Dream', is a duet with 12-year-old country artist BILLY GILMAN, a 4'7\" vocal powerhouse who became the youngest musician ever to have a song in Billboard magazine's Country Singles Chart. \u003cbr/\u003eThe seasonal cheer for the Church family was soured by a bitter court dispute involving the soprano's former manager, who was sacked by her parents, but good sense eventually prevailed, and the dispute, which had been simmering for much of the year, was eventually settled out of court. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite having earned millions of pounds, the child star will have to wait until she is 22 before she can spend it.  Currently, her parents restrict the teenager to only £60 ($90) per month in pocket money. \u003cbr/\u003eWith her extraordinary voice, she sees opera as her next big challenge.  \"My ambitions is to sing my favourite opera, Madame Butterfly at La Scala in Milan, and get a standing ovation, of course,\" she says, modestly. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Filippa Giordano won't need to watch her back too much.  She is already well established on the Italian opera scene, and performed Casta Diva from the opera Norma, before the traditional countdown began.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year the outside facade of Harrods takes on a different appearance.  The store's proprietor, al Fayed has had several major run-ins with the British establishment, including the Royal Family, over citizenship and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.  In a pre-emptive move, al Fayed has had the royal warrants of approval removed from the outside of the building.  It was widely expected that the Royals were going to ask for this to happen anyway, but al Fayed has always been the kind of person to make the first strike. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd queuing up to go inside, Pat Hard and Lorraine Gough from Bath lined up from one o'clock in the morning.  Marcello Pannone from Rome had his eye on a Corum watch and Boris and Vana Petrov planned their holiday from Russia to London to coincide with the sale.
