We really see that. You don't feel it because it's slow, but you see it then, and then you are asking, when it's floating, how can it be so stable?"
The twelve floating homes at Sea Village was built in 1979.
Today, residents say the neighbourhood on the water is a friendly and unique place to live.
Owners do not have title to the land, but lease the property from the provincial and federal governments.
Across town on the shore of North Vancouver lies a newer cluster of luxurious floating homes.
The 20 homes are an integral part of the Mosquito Creek Marina, which is also home to many sailboats and yachts.
When Nancy and Geoff Power sold their 3,000 square-foot waterfront home in a nearby community three years ago, they say it was an easy decision moving into their floating home.
Since the house is on the water, it can sometimes gently rock. But Power says she quickly got used to it.
She says she really appreciates the eclectic group of people who live in the neighbouring float homes as well as nearby residents, who help make the area feel like a true and friendly community.
When she was moving in, she realised her sofa wouldn't fit through the front door.
Some of the neighbours quickly came together and hoisted the sofa onto a barge and lifted it through her living room's sliding glass doors.
All in all, the couple says they don't regret their decision at all.
"We had a house on the water in Deep Cove and we knew that leaving the waterfront was going to be really hard. So this was a really natural place for us to come to. We've downsized considerably and we have no property to take care of, very little upkeep with this new house, so this was just a really good fit for us," says Nancy Power.
The first floating homes in Mosquito Creek, known as Spirit Trail Homes, were built in 2010.
It is expected that by 2016, there could be a total of 44 homes in the marina.
The prices range from 525,000 Canadian dollars (478-thousand US dollars) for smaller, 1,155 square-foot homes to 725,000 Canadian dollars (661-thousand US dollars) for larger, 1,700 square-foot homes.
Floating homeowners at Mosquito Creek pay an annual moorage fee, but do not own the land or water.
The area is owned and managed by the Squamish First Nation people, an indigenous local tribe.
Vancouver and surrounding municipalities are home to over two million people, yet there are only 300 to 350 floating homes.
It is unlikely that many more will be built due to lack of mooring space.
The area surrounding Mosquito Creek will likely become home to many new housing and retail developments in the coming years.
One advantage of living in the area, owners and realtors say, is that it is easy to get to the city, just a 12-minute ride on public transport, known as the Seabus, or a short drive.
"I can't say enough about how great this location is relative to amenities. Urban amenities," says Judy Ross, an agent for Spirit Trail Ocean Homes.
"I know Nancy has told me her and Geoff hop on the Seabus, go down to the Four Seasons, have a drink, dinner, maybe catch a movie or a play, and if they have a few too many glasses of wine, it doesn't matter, because they hop on the Seabus and come back and no muss, no fuss. I mean, where can you do that? So it is the location about one of the major reasons our homes have done so well."
The marina is a hub of activity.
Boats come and go all year-round, and the water is home to sea otters and fish.
Residents can often watch seaplanes taking off and landing, even cruise ships making their way in and out of the harbour.
Iris Geist and her husband Max bought a floating home in Mosquito Creek a year ago (January 2012) fulfilling their lifelong dream of living on the water.
Geist says the house is light and bright, and at just over 1,400 square feet, is spacious enough for her and her husband.
She says the home is everything she dreamed of. She says she loves being surrounded by nature and sea life.
"There's nothing much you have to get used to. What you have to get used to is constant beauty. And sunsets.
