Reacting to the Argentinian government´s announcement on Wednesday that the country would begin...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSpanish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eArgentina's cattle in the Pampas outside Buenos Aires thousands can be seen grazing, hiding under trees from the summer heat.   \u003cbr/\u003eReacting to the Argentinian government´s announcement on Wednesday that the country would begin vaccinating cattle against foot and mouth disease, cattle ranchers and grill owners say the government is doing too little too late.\u003cbr/\u003eNeighboring Brazil ordered the temporary suspension of imports of Argentine beef on the bone, but then lifted the ban on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Argentinian Agriculture Secretary, Antonio Berhongaray, said it was just a preventive measure and that vaccination efforts would be focused in border areas and zones where there are many cattle ranches.\u003cbr/\u003eBerhongaray's announcement came amid a storm of media accusations and criticism that the government might have been covering up the presence of foot and mouth disease in Argentina's herd.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country has been considered generally free of the disease since last September. \u003cbr/\u003eBut there have been concerns that the disease re-entered the country with cattle smuggled in from neighbouring Paraguay.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the next few days, a delegation of food safety experts are to travel to Canada and the United States, two main purchasers of Argentine beef, to inform officials there of the vaccination program.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring an outbreak of the disease last year, both countries temporarily suspended Argentine beef imports. \u003cbr/\u003eCanada this month also banned Brazilian beef from the North American Free Trade Agreement countries, claiming there was danger of mad cow disease.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil announced it would temporarily suspend Argentine beef on the bone and vehicles at main border points were made to pass through iodine baths and travelers forced to leave all animal-based products at the border.\u003cbr/\u003eRancher Hector Solari has 1-thousand 5-hundred head of cattle and is worried that the government is not taking the problem of cattle diseases seriously enough.         \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\"They need to implement serious decisions to eradicate hoof-and-mouth disease totally. And moreover we should be an honest country and other countries should believe us when they look at us. We should not lower our guard because we have already gone through this in the past when we lowered our guard. And these problems can always come back to haunt us.
