Close pulls to wide from head of large sculpture, to reveal shape of head and body with arms outstretched
Salvador Dali is one of the world's most recognisable surrealist artists.
The eccentric Spaniard's museum draws thousands of tourists to the city of Figueres in the northeast corner of Spain to see some of his iconic works.
But it's at his house in Port Lligat the genius mind of this artist is best understood - from his polar bear lamp shades to giant eggs adorning his property.
In the far northeast corner of Spain, the city of Figueres looks much like many other Spanish towns.
But, as the birthplace of famed surrealist artist Salvador Dali, Figueres holds some surprises.
Adorned with giant eggs, gold mannequins, sculptures of traditional breads, the Dali Theatre-Museum bills itself as the largest surrealistic object in the world.
It started life as a 19th century municipal theatre, but was largely destroyed in the Spanish Civil War.
The Spanish artist transformed the ruins into a showcase for his work and from other artists he admired.
Since opening in 1974, the museum has become a large tourist attraction in the region. It had more than 880,000 visits in 2010.
As an artist, Dali spanned much of the 20th Century, creating paintings, sculptures, photographs, holograms, installations and all manner of spectacles.
Montse Aguer is director of the Centre for Dali Studies. She knew him in his last few years before his death in 1989 and has long studied his work and written several books about the artist.
Some 1,500 works are on display - from small to large.
Many reflect Dali's skill at manipulating perception and his determination to push viewers to constantly re-evaluate what they see.
A large painting of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln is on one wall of the main hall of the museum.
At first sight it appears to be in the Cubist style, but the view is dependent on the perspective.
Step closer and Lincoln's face becomes a nude woman - Dali's wife Gala.
"This is Gala, she becomes a smaller piece of what is a bigger portrait of US president Abraham Lincoln," says Aguer.
"This is one of Dali's games and it prompts us to rethink the way we look at art pieces. We must never stop at a first impression, we have to look twice at the art piece to get a new meaning."
Strolling through the museum it's easy to imagine Dali with his trademark long moustaches, winking at the viewer as if sharing a joke.
"Dali as you say was very ironic, very provocative, he did not want a conventional museum, he wanted a museum without a chronological order, so the visitor is surprised at every moment and so he can understand what he sees at the museum depending on its own knowledge," says Aguer.
With the freedom to design his own museum, Dali could devote large spaces to create the effects he wanted.
For example, one of the best-known rooms is devoted to the actress and sex-symbol Mae West.
An elaborate double fireplace, paintings on the wall and a strange couch form an image of the sultry actress' face.
To bring it all into focus, visitors peer through a lens hanging under the belly of a camel.
The Palace of Wind Room features a painted ceiling, vaguely reminiscent of classical art.
However, the largest figures are Gala and Dali, with comically large feet and bodies shrinking into the distance to give perspective.
The riot of images scattered seemingly haphazardly around the large museum might seem confusing - but, for fans of Dali, that's part of the charm.
"It is quite all right. You see the things in a disorderly manner or in a certain order, but not chronologically. You find things as you see more pieces, more paintings, you understand better what is coming next. Is like you enter in the Dali world," says Maria Llatser, a tourist from Castellon, Spain.
She doesn't consider Dali her favourite artist but wants to see the museum because of his impact on the art world of the last century.
A simple unmarked stone marks Dali's resting place in the centre of the Museum's main hall.
To gain a greater understanding of the artist's vision, tourists can visit his home and studio by Cadaques, Spain, about 30 kilometres away (18.75 miles).
"It's an arid world, a mineral landscape, almost extraterrestrial. He said it was a world which helped him to smooth things (polish himself), to become more austere. I believe Cadaques determines the way Dali sees reality," Aguer says of Dali's home.
The home is right on the waterfont of Portlligat on Spain's Costa Brava.
Hills plunge down to the water, islands dot the horizon.
True to form, Dali's home has some unusual decorations - a giant egg on top, elsewhere large silver busts on a roof.
Fishing boats lie on the beach just steps from Dali's home and studio. Now, visitors can tour the home in small groups - reservations are required.
Entering the home, tourists first see a stuffed polar bear lamp with an owl peering over it's shoulder. The space is cramped with strange objects. Winding stairways lead through multiple levels.
In his studio, tourists learn about his technique and vision.
A large apparatus can raise or lower big canvases for the artist to work. An unfinished painting is still on the wall.
Images of Gala and Dali abound.
Dali's studio window opens out directly onto the wild beauty of the Costa Brava. The view may seem familiar to fans of his art.
Towards the end of the tour, one room is devoted to photos of the artist and celebrities and politicians. Dali seems to have met just about everyone worth meeting in the 20th century.
The home in Portlligat is less visited - more off the beaten path than the Museum in Figueres.
It isn't open throughout the entire year and just over 100,000 people visited last year.
Claudie Carrere travelled from near Perpignan, France, to see the house.
She says Dali was important for the region and she has enjoyed the experience.
"Well, it's the first time I'm visiting it. And we are really surprised by its originality and its colours," she says.
The grounds of the home also offer another chance to experience Dali's signature device.
Nothing is what it seems at first - a pile of industrial wreckage becomes a giant figure of a person lying among the trees.

<div
