View of valley with old man sitting in the foreground\u003cbr/\u003eThe secluded Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan was on its way to becoming the world's newest democracy on Monday, as voters cast ballots to select a parliament and end more than a century of absolute monarchy.\u003cbr/\u003eBut like much else in the mountainous land - long known as a quirky holdout from modernity, allowing television and the Internet only in 1999 - Monday's vote came with a twist: It was the king, not the people, who pressed for democracy.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of voters queued in North Thimphu in Bhutan to vote in the country's first parliamentary elections.\u003cbr/\u003eThe election commission said that by 11 a.m. (0600 GMT) 30 percent of about 320-thousand registered voters had cast ballots.\u003cbr/\u003eEven in remote corners of the largely rural country - in tiny hamlets where voting machines were delivered by yak - elections were going smoothly.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople arrived early at Zilukha polling station as voting began at 9am local time.\u003cbr/\u003ePema Tenzin, who works in Thimphu, said it was a very different feeling to be choosing a leader by casting a vote. \u003cbr/\u003eChuni Dorji, a student, said she voted for the party she thought embodied the king's vision best.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The reason why I voted for the party that I voted is because I'm hopeful that that party will take our country to the next level,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eBhutanese have reason to be ambivalent. The tiny country of about 600-thousand people has prospered under royal rule - its fast-growing economy is slowly\u003cbr/\u003elifting many people out of poverty and nearly everyone has access to schools and hospitals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe success contrasts with other South Asian countries such as Nepal or Bangladesh, which can seem like case studies in democracy gone wrong. \u003cbr/\u003eEven in neighbouring India, democracy is a chaotic and corrupt affair that's done\u003cbr/\u003elittle to provide decent education or medical care for its 1.1 billion people.\u003cbr/\u003eChief Election Commissioner Kunzang Wangdi, said the turnout was very encouraging for electoral officials.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Turnout is looking very good, so, I think much more than what we had expected. This is the most peaceful, the most well-organised.\"\u003cbr/\u003eApart from trepidation about the future, the campaign for the 47-seat National Assembly has also been baffling for many in a society that frowns on self promotion and open criticism.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two political parties both hew closely to the king's vision. Both feature leaders who served twice as prime minister under royal rule. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth say they'll follow the government's latest five-year plan - they call it \"His Majesty's vision.\" And both say they'll promote Gross National Happiness, an all-encompassing political philosophy that seeks to balance material progress with spiritual
