Close of glass rabbit sitting in bowl    \u003cbr/\u003eDeep in the forests of Sweden, glass has been manufactured in a traditional way for centuries.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut a strong Swedish Krona in combination with the financial turmoil in Europe is now threatening the production.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo historical glassworks already factories closed down last year (2012).  \u003cbr/\u003eHere at the Kosta Boda glassworks factory, glass has been manufactured in very much the same way for centuries.  \u003cbr/\u003eMaster craftsmen shape the hot molten glass into forms by blowing, rolling and twisting.  \u003cbr/\u003eA variety of shapes start appearing; traditional wine glasses, vases and bowls but also some contemporary designs of animals and skulls.  \u003cbr/\u003eSometimes a second layer of coloured glass is added, or when a design requires it, a second molten glass piece is shaped on the first glass.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe molten glass is kept in large ovens to keep a temperature of over 850 degrees Celsius (1600 degrees Fahrenheit).  \u003cbr/\u003eThe whole glassworks it steaming hot, even as the Swedish winter is already underway outside.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis glassworks factory was established in 1742 and is now the oldest glassworks that is still operating in what is called the \"Kingdom of Crystal,\" an area in the Smaland district of Sweden that was once dominated by the creation of glass.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey produce traditional works of art as well as new designs by designers like Kosta local Ludvig Lofgren.\u003cbr/\u003eLofgren was born in Kosta and after school he started working at the glassworks factory as a glass blower.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut after a year in the glasswork he went on to study at one of Sweden's most prestigious art academies and have a successful career away from the glassworks.  \u003cbr/\u003eHis designs re inspiring a new generation of glass buyer.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the ongoing financial crisis in Europe continuing many of the area's glassworks are now under considerable financial strain.  \u003cbr/\u003eTwo glassworks owned by the New Wave group, the same company that owns the Kosta Boda glassworks factory, closed last year (2012) and 130 people lost their jobs.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe reason given by the company was the strong Swedish krona that has hurt exports but also the collapse of the Greek economy.  \u003cbr/\u003eJenny Sundqvist, head of product development at Kosta Boda, says the recession has affected their markets.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our largest market is Sweden followed by Norway. Greece used to be our third largest market but for obvious reasons it is not anymore. So the US is now our third largest market.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to New Wave group their glassworks division has lost around of 300-million Swedish kronor (44.7 million US dollars) since 2008.  \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Sundqvist the collapse of the Greek economy has played a large part in that financial loss.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a huge problem. From being the third largest market to practically disappearing. It is a big problem for us.\" \u003cbr/\u003eJohan Nilsson began working as a glass blower at the Kosta Boda glassworks factory soon after finishing school.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow, more than two decades later, he is a Glass Master, the highest title you can achieve in a glassworks.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe is put in charge of the most difficult pieces, such as large and heavy vases and complex structures. \u003cbr/\u003eTo him the tradition of glass blowing and glass forming is something that needs to be preserved - at all costs. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd, he says, glass blowers must have an instinct for the work.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You have to get what this is all about. You can't just sit around and add up numbers. You have to understand what the glass is all about, get a feeling for it in your heart. That's what its all about. And of course we can sell our glass but we have to get the message out there. This is a really exciting craft and we have to make sure that we preserve it.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the ways the company is trying to preserve the craft and improve their profits is to market the glass to a new customer base, as Sundqvist explains.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Our customers are getting older. We are going to continue to make products that are attractive to them but at the same time expand our customer base to include younger people.\" \u003cbr/\u003eTo attract younger customers the company has brought in a new crop of designers like Ludvig Lofgren.  \u003cbr/\u003eLofgren says he is certain handmade quality glass has a future, as long as the design keeps up with the changing markets.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think there is a future as long as we work strategically and with good designs that are fresh and cutting-edge. Then people are willing to pay for the products. If we can then also maintain our high quality then of course there is a future here.\" \u003cbr/\u003eFor now the Kosta Boda glassworks is safe, the mother company has announced that it will invest in it to try to improve their sales.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut it remains to be seen if these glass ornaments, the bears and owls will win over a new market to compensate for the loss of the Greek glass
