Some women will have a lower body mass index under 20, but it will depend on their body, on their stature their shape and their size really, so that's why a body mass index measurement is much more accurate than giving an absolute weight measurement in terms of kilograms or pounds.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSome women, including royal mum the Duchess of Cambridge suffer with emesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness and nutritionists say this can lead to some women being slightly underweight.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Rajasingam: \"In terms of women who have low body mass index, it would depend on whether the woman has always been that weight, has she recently lost weight, is there another issue why she might have a low body mass index. If we've excluded everything else then we would just monitor that woman because there's a slightly increased risk of her baby being smaller than normal when it's born.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNutritionists say most women overcome morning sickness by their second trimester, around the fourth month. \u003cbr/\u003eSaidee Bailey is founder of the website Perfect Start Pregnancy which advises women on nutrition.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says women shouldn't be anxious about being exactly the right BMI if they have a slight build.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Bailey: \"Women who are naturally very slim or women who are naturally more curvaceous, that's absolutely fine throughout pregnancy because that's your natural body and we don't want to change that at all. For women who are slightly underweight you know making sure that you are having meals little and often and you're trying to eat you know good foods and making the most of what you do eat, that's really important you know, not being too anxious, not worrying too much about it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBailey is researching what she describes as nutritional programming at Imperial College.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the study of how nutrition can effect and possibly manipulate a babies genes during gestation and even after birth. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth Rajasingam and Bailey are concerned by the global increase in obesity because it means many more women are obese when they become pregnant.\u003cbr/\u003eThey both warn against over eating during pregnancy.\u003cbr/\u003eBailey says: \"Pregnancy is absolutely not a license to eat for two. Throughout your first trimester we expect you to maybe only have an additional fifty to a hundred calories per day. So that would be equivalent to an apple or maybe a cereal bar, the second trimester we suggest adding maybe two to three hundred calories per day and in your third trimester, slightly more than that maybe four to five hundred calories a day.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors and nutritionists say a woman's body makes changes throughout her pregnancy.\u003cbr/\u003ePregnant women produce more of the hormone progesterone which helps to slow down their metabolism and slows down the digestion of food so they absorb more nutrients from the food they eat.\u003cbr/\u003eRajasingham warns that obesity in pregnancy increases the risks to a unborn baby. \u003cbr/\u003e \"There are higher rates of miscarriage and that continues throughout the pregnancy and early on the baby may not be formed properly so you might have what we call neural tube defects where the spine of the baby doesn't form well, you may have problems around the heart of the baby forming well, or the abdomen the tummy of the baby. Later on in pregnancy there are the complications that many women do get in pregnancy, but they occur more frequently in women with a high BMI and those are things like pre-eclampsia and diabetes of pregnancy.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMost women are advised to take folic acid early on in pregnancy, but Bailey says this isn't the only micronutrient pregnant women should be thinking about and foods rich in cholene, magnesium, selenium and zinc are also important. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Bailey: \"Recent studies have begun to reveal how women are  becoming deficient in micronutrients such as magnesium which is one of the ones that actually can help to reduce morning sickness, other studies have shown women to be deficient in things like iodine and various other micronutrients that are so important throughout pregnancy.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors say women are increasingly advised that what they eat before their baby is born is as important as the nutrition they are given as infants.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television \u003cbr/\u003eGuildford, UK - 13 February 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
