Close up of monitor showing movement in graph form
Liquid bone the texture of toothpaste and cancer diagnosis at the speed of light are just some of the gadgets expected to revolutionise medical treatment.
The innovations have been on show in the United Kingdom where their inventors have been battling to win a share of three million dollars worth of funding.
They all have one aim, to transform their inventions into commercially produced tools and techniques which will be used in operating theatres, clinics and doctors' surgeries around the world.
This may be a demonstration, but the benefits of this optical scanner to breast cancer patients are very real.
It's been built for use in the operating theatre by Surgeon Mohammed Keshtgar of London's Royal Free Hospital and it allows him to discover immediately whether the patient he is operating on is one of the thirty to forty per cent of women whose cancer has spread from her breast to the lymph nodes (figure from Surgeon Keshtgar).
The lymph nodes act as filters to the lymphatic system. Their job is to sieve out and trap bacteria, viruses, cancer cells and make sure they get removed from the body.
After Keshtgar has identified the lymph gland he takes it out of the patient, carries out a biopsy on the gland, and then divides it into two. It is then placed under the specially designed optical scanner which scans the whole surface of the lymph gland.
The signal it gives out when there is cancer is different to the signal from non-cancerous glands. This in turn is translated onto the screen of a computer monitor which becomes increasingly red to correspond with the amount of the cancer found in the biopsy.
The procedure not only saves time and eliminates the need for more pathological tests, it means that if the cancer has spread the surgeon can immediately continue to remove the lymph glands.
Therefore the cancer sufferer does not have to wait for the result of further tests or put their bodies through further operations.
Not all the innovations on show are so highly technical, or aimed at purely clinical use.
People in the United Kingdom spend approximately three billion pounds each year on dental care, according to the School of Dental Sciences at the University of Liverpool.
Now a team from the University has created a tool which they hope will enable them to get a slice of this large and lucrative market with a device which reveals the plaque on teeth.
The device shines a blue light which the user angles at their teeth. They then look through spectacles which have red and yellow filters which makes the plaque show up red. The team is eventually hoping to eliminate the need for the spectacles by incorporating filters onto a mirror.
The team believes it'll appeal to the same consumers who are willing to pay for expensive electric toothbrushes.
One of the big winners at the Medical Futures Awards (2 December 2008) was a polymer based liquid bone invention.
It starts off as the same texture as toothpaste, but when it is injected into the body's temperature it hardens within 15 minutes and has similar characteristics to normal bone.
The Liquid Bone's inventor Professor Kevin Shakesheff says once surgeons have injected the material into the correct site in the body, new bone tissue and new stem cells will migrate into that site .
Also polymer is biodegradable so over a six month period it will gradually break down as it is replaced by growing stem cells and regenerate healthy bone tissue.
It could drastically reduce the need to take bone grafts, which means doctors don't have to use invasive surgery on two parts of a patient's body to heal just one area. The fluidity of the substance also means it can be injected into awkward areas of the body.
Some inventors are already well on their way to getting their product into the medical marketplace . The company Horizon Discovery has produced a series of genetic techniques which can determine which groups of patients will respond to particular cancer drugs based on their genetic profile.
Director Rob Howes says getting a drug onto the market is hugely expensive and can cost up to a billion pounds (almost three billion dollars) and can take between five to ten years.
Even when a drug is successful it doesn't always work on all patients, Horizon's techniques hope to make the drugs more cost effective.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
