vaccine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision comes as the new swine flu strain continues to spread around the world, with 23 countries now confirming to WHO 1,658 cases and 30 deaths.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Marie-Paule Kieny, director of WHO's Initiative for Vaccine Research, said the expert group will hold a teleconference on May 14 to assess the case for switching production.\u003cbr/\u003eVaccine producers can only make one kind of flu vaccine at a time: seasonal flu vaccine or pandemic vaccine. \u003cbr/\u003eKieny said last week that WHO would very likely tell vaccine makers to switch to making a pandemic one.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that decision means WHO has to guess whether the world will need pandemic vaccine more than it needs regular flu vaccine.\u003cbr/\u003eSeasonal flu kills up to 500-thousand people a year, giving WHO a strong reason to hesitate. \u003cbr/\u003eExperts are still unsure how deadly the swine flu strain is, but because production takes months, a decision needs to be made soon.\u003cbr/\u003eKieny said WHO Director-General Margaret Chan and UN chief Ban Ki-Moon will host a meeting with vaccine manufacturers on May 19 to discuss if manufacturers might make a portion of their vaccines available for developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe global body already is talking to manufacturers about the possibility of placing advance orders for a future vaccine on behalf of developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many Western countries already have struck deals with vaccine manufacturers that guarantee them pandemic vaccine as soon as it is produced.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral labs around the world already are working on ingredients for a swine flu vaccine, labelled A/H1N1 by WHO, that was first identified in Mexico and the United States two weeks ago.\u003cbr/\u003eKieny said it would take four to six months for the first batch of vaccine to roll off the assembly line.\u003cbr/\u003eWHO estimates that the world's vaccine producers could So for the time being we have no sign that vaccines that would be developed using the strain first identified would not be effective. Now in terms of what will happen in the future it is really difficult to predict. It may, at one time it will drift, but it may drift next year, it may drift a lot, it may drift only a little.
