Various of sculptures lying under a tree\u003cbr/\u003eHolographic portraits have arrived in India, giving the traditional art form a 3D edge.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the setting up of the first holography studio in Kerala, people now have the chance to preserve lifelike images of their loved ones at affordable rates. \u003cbr/\u003eThese artists are capturing the sitter in the traditional way - by adding paint and pencil drawings to paper. \u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast, holograms are life-like images giving an impression of a three-dimensional image to the viewer. \u003cbr/\u003eA holographic portrait combines the principles of painting and sculpture- it will have the colour and the third dimension, but without the drudgery of sitting for a painting or sculpture session.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a unique three-dimensional image that captures the living presence of a person, in what is claimed to be one of the most creative and exciting ways of portraiture ever. \u003cbr/\u003eThe film with the 3-D image, framed in glass, looks plain and dark, but when lit, leaps into life.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Ajithkumar, a holography expert, is setting up a studio in Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram that offers to provide affordable holographic portraits to customers. \u003cbr/\u003eLaser holography is the simplest and purest holographic art form and offers the most realistic and lifelike holographic portraits. \u003cbr/\u003eThis type of hologram is made by shining laser light directly on the person whose portrait is to be made. \u003cbr/\u003eThe laser used is absolutely safe and well within the threshold limits. \u003cbr/\u003eThe light reflected from the subject is captured on a holographic film and at the same time, the reference light is also recorded. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pattern thus recorded from the interference of the object and reference beams, is a hologram.\u003cbr/\u003eAn uncommon art form, holographic art is expensive. \u003cbr/\u003eIn order to join the exclusive club of celebrities like Queen Elizabeth II, who have their own holographic portraits, a customer has to pay out a minimum of 1000 USD.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Ajithkumar claims his portraits would be available at a lesser price of about 350 USD. \u003cbr/\u003eA holographic portrait session will typically take about two hours, including the framing of the portrait. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Ajithkumar, holographic portraits are so vivid, realistic and with so many details that one can easily be fooled into thinking that the person is really there. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says this application will find wide use in family portraits where two or more images can be combined in a single portrait. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Everybody is concerned about the micro families now... so, if you look at the centre, you'll be able to see the kid, left side you can see the father and the right side you can see the mother also. So, this is going to have a big market in India,\" says Ajithkumar. \u003cbr/\u003eAs of now, there are just a handful of holographic portrait studios across the world, with the most established of them being in New York. \u003cbr/\u003eHolography has great potential in archiving and data storage, processing and transfer. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 1980s, the trend for 3-D pictures and post cards caught the fancy of the people.\u003cbr/\u003e3-D devotional pictures still have their own market.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the art world is not unduly worried by latest new challenge.\u003cbr/\u003ePrincipal of the Fine Arts College, Dr Ajaya Kumar, says when digital art made its debut, artists had been worried about its impact on the traditional art market. \u003cbr/\u003eBut their fears were set to rest over the years. \u003cbr/\u003eSimilarly, he feels holographic art will find its niche and market.
