Various of French women having lunch at a Paris bistro\u003cbr/\u003eOne year on since the global credit crunch erupted into a full blown crisis, France is just one of several European nations feeling the pinch.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the capital, Paris, which normally empties at this time of year, Parisians were staying put, with many forced to put summer holidays on hold and spend their summer at home.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the banks of the River Seine, Parisians were sitting around in deckchairs reading a book, while women sunbathed in bikinis, and ice cream stands did a roaring trade.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a typical August evening after work on the so-called Paris Plages, a makeshift beach on the banks of the Seine - a pale substitute for a real beach holiday, but  in these troubled economic times it is the best many Parisians can do.\u003cbr/\u003eElyssa Farhat, a woman sunbathing at Paris Plages on Wednesday, is just one person forgoing the traditional French August getaway.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's too expensive. And it's true that this year was rather difficult. It is the first time I am not going on holiday. So instead I am enjoying myself at the Paris Plages,\" Farhat told AP Television News.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country normally shuts down for the entire month of August, turning cities into ghost towns as the masses hit the beaches or country retreats. Not so this year.\u003cbr/\u003eWith economies stagnating and inflation in the Euro zone at about 4 percent, people are cutting the length of their holidays and staying closer to home, or, in some cases, just staying at home.\u003cbr/\u003eTravel agents across France have suffered the consequences of the economic crisis this year.\u003cbr/\u003eCatherine Gourel, a travel agent in Paris, confirmed that things have \"changed a lot\" in the past year. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We had quite a lot of middle-class people who could go on holiday before. Now I see that they are unfortunately restricted by their budgets because they have other priorities. So they go away for a week or they go on mini-breaks, but they do not go on the trips we used to sell in the past,\" Gourel said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People have money problems. They want to leave but the rising price of fuel, which has been significant this year and I think it's the first year it has been continuous since January, really prevents those with lower budgets from booking tickets,\" she explained.\u003cbr/\u003eThe deepening economic squeeze has made many wary of splashing out on expensive breaks.\u003cbr/\u003eWould-be travellers have been hit by soaring costs in Europe for food, fuel and air travel - in short, just about everything needed for a successful holiday.\u003cbr/\u003eFrance's main hospitality and catering union said in a report last week that hotel occupancy was holding steady. But it said there was a 20-30 percent drop in customers at cafes and restaurants as people cut costs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"of course for a while now we have more and more tap water on the tables and fewer wine bottles and even fewer mineral water bottles. the IFOP (market research company) agency for L'Humanite newspaper said 42 percent of French people planned to stay home this summer, three points higher than last year, and 10 points more than in
