Various of Plumen 001 designer lightbulbs\u003cbr/\u003eA pavement that generates electricity, and a spinning rocking chair are just some of the designs shortlisted for this year's Brit Insurance Design Awards. \u003cbr/\u003eInnovations from the fields of fashion, architecture, furniture, transport and consumer products went are currently on display at the Design Museum in London.\u003cbr/\u003eA hand strokes the surface and hundreds of tiny light panels dance in response.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Mimosa, nominated for best interactive design at the Brit Insurance Design Awards.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was created by London designer Jason Bruges using slim organic LED panels arranged in petal configurations like an electronic flowerbed.\u003cbr/\u003eA heat sensor follows the user's movements and the petals contract and open.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganic LED (OLED) is a new technology  found mostly in mobile phone screens. OLED creates light by passing electricity through an organic semiconductor - as a result the panels can be slimmer than traditional LED screens.\u003cbr/\u003eMimosa is purely aesthetic but some of the nominations have positive practical applications.\u003cbr/\u003eLike Pavegen, paving slabs which generate electricity from footsteps - nominated in the product category.\u003cbr/\u003eIn busy shopping streets or train stations, footsteps alone can generate around 32.4 kilowatts an hour.\u003cbr/\u003eThe slabs' rubber surface is made from recycled car tyres which Pavegen says provides a durable alternative to concrete.\u003cbr/\u003ePavegen's 25-year-old creator Laurence Kempball-Cook invented his green solution while studying at University, but he has big plans for his young company.\u003cbr/\u003eKempball-Cook says: \"No one really likes to recycle, it's a pain, it's out of your day and it's time you don't really have. This way all you have to do is walk down the road and in doing so you can generate energy to power things like street lighting, low energy applications, anything on the street that needs power can be plugged straight into the slabs.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePavegen is being trialled in schools in the UK and will be installed at the Westfield shopping centre at the Olympic site in Stratford - Europe's largest shopping centre - when it opens.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the nominees don't need to be worthy, they can just be good fun.\u003cbr/\u003eHere's a rocking chair with a twist - literally. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Spun chair by Heatherwick studios looks like something from a potter's wheel and is nominated in the furniture category.\u003cbr/\u003eThe user can rock from side to side or 360 degrees.\u003cbr/\u003eUK novelist Will Self is on the 2011 jury.\u003cbr/\u003eHe gets a chance to look at some of this year's shortlist.\u003cbr/\u003eSelf says: \"I think the thing about British design that is healthy and interesting is it's relatively speaking un-ossified. The tradition self-conscious design is relatively new in this country and design in London in particular takes place against a backdrop of an old-built environment so it has to kind of fight to assert itself and I think that's healthy in a way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Cycle Hire scheme, launched in London in the summer 2010, receives a nomination in the transport category.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robust cycles had to be practical as well as stylish and feature high-powered dynamo lights, adjustable saddles, luggage racks and chain guards.\u003cbr/\u003eThe London Mayor's transport advisor Kulveer Ranger hopes the bikes will become as iconic as the red London bus or black cab.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"We really hoped the bike would become an icon for London much like the red bus or the black taxi. But you can never really tell until you see the reaction from Londoners and visitors to London. And what I can say is it's been unprecedented in the way everybody's embraced the scheme.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe bikes can be taken and returned at the docking stations which had to be designed in a way making them recognisable but not obtrusive to the surroundings.\u003cbr/\u003eOver 2.5 million journeys have been made on the bikes since their launch.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bikes have become known by Londoner's as \"Boris bikes\" after Mayor Boris Johnson who introduced them.\u003cbr/\u003eWill Self believes the bikes are almost more striking at a standstill than on the go.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They're very striking. But they're there, they're in the city and it's only right and proper that they should be shortlisted.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDesigner Neil Gavin from London-based Greyworld studios throws a pot of virtual paint over an LED wall.\u003cbr/\u003eThe installation was commissioned by Nokia for the launch of its N8 phone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pots are filled with pretend paint and motion sensors splatter brightly coloured LED paint over the wall.\u003cbr/\u003ePaint is nominated in the interactive category.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most eye-catching nominations is English fashion designer Gareth Pugh's aluminium coated nylon dress from his Spring/Summer 2011 collection.\u003cbr/\u003eInspired by the futuristic Samurai, this mirrored, tightly-tailored dress acts is designed as a \"modern camouflage\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe scale like construction was painstakingly slashed by hand, giving this armour-effect which reflects the light from a thousand different directions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bulb of design inspiration lights up.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Plumen 001 is a low-energy bulb that shows everyday utilities don't have to be boring.\u003cbr/\u003eThe symmetrical intertwined flourescent tubes mimic a bird's plume feathers - giving the bulb its name.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Plumen uses 80 per cent less electricity than a traditional incandescent bulb and lasts eight times longer. It is nominated in the product category.\u003cbr/\u003eThe category winners will be announced on February 28 and the overall winner is decided on March 15.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Design Awards exhibition will be on display at the London Design Museum from February 16 - August 7, 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eThe awards are now in their fourth year and all nominations are made by industry
